I guess they just didn't learn from the last outage, which was also cause by a upgrade to the "infrastructure"...

I am sure if it was easy everyone could do it. Sh*t happens.

The outage didn't affect me that much, I was in class all day. However I'm sure some people and companies were very bothered by it. RIM's official statement seems like fluff to me. Why didn't any of the phone companies have an answer for the dropped servie during the outage? Why would you schedule and upgrade druing peak business hours? Just seems funny, if you had a problem simply admit you had a problem. Don't cover it up.

Wasn't there a scheduled outtage coming up in the very near future anyway? So we got it a little early.

It was just a couple of hours, I have read some people's comments on other webpages, There Blackberries were out only for 3 hours in the afternoon.

    3 hours... so what.

For some corporate users, when they get a 100 emails an hours, 3 hours could probably be a long time...

Let's just hope they learn from each time something happens. (Like doing upgrades in the middle of the night!) No company is perfect! RIM is just one of the biggest and the best so they are held under the microscope. Other companies have this kind of stuff happen all the time. You just never hear about it.

well said. It's impossible not to have outages with with current BB user growth. Also, GPRS has been phasing out and the data demand rapidly increasing with faster 3G networks plus Wi-Fi... all contributes to compounding the upgrade issues RIM must be facing.

Not to forget At&T's outage, they also have millions of new iphone & BlackBerry data users.

Re: Outage Monday caused by upgrade designed to increase capacity.

I know RIM keeps stating they were only down for about 3 hours, but I'm guessing that is a very conservative estimate. About half of our users were without BB service for up to 8 hours or so. Users steadily lost service starting around 10 AM eastern, and service wasn't restored until after 6PM.

And the quote on h t t p colon slash sash ca.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idCAN1228180120080213 that states "No messages were lost and the system continues to operate normally today," is inaccurate at best. In our organization, not a single email or PIN message that was destined for a blackberry device during the outage EVER reached the handheld when the service was back up.

That's not good for corporate users... at all! At best, the service was interrupted for 3 hours, but 3 hours is a looooooong time. Especially when your business requires you to be connected and accessible at all times.

I sure hope Boeing or Airbus don't think that way. Or for that matter, your (wired) phone company. How many times over the years have you picked up a phone and not received a dialtone? Think about the implications of extended downtime to BB end users in the Defense and Medical fields. Downtime could have serious impact.

For better or worse, Blackberry units have become indespensible in many professions and loss of service (even briefly) can have serious fallout.

Uptime is sometimes measured in 9s. Five 9s (99.999 percent availability) translates into ~ 2 minutes of downtime per year. There are many companies whose products meet and even exceed that SLA.

Google "Five 9s" and check out some of the hits (I can't post URLs yet).

Re: Outage Monday caused by upgrade designed to increase capacity.

~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~ I agree with those who say 3 hours is vital to some people (and not only for BES users). Thank goodness it doesn't happen more often but it does.

I am using BIS and my BB was down Saturday for 8 to 10 hours. I was waiting for an important email and didn't get it until late at night. The Stacks saved me from blessing out TMobile thinking something was wrong with my phone LOL

Plus my teacher has a list of emails for everyone in our class to notify us of anything major. This communication is vital for us because our teacher is Deaf and uses email to communicate when we're not in class.

So I fully understand the frustration felt by these outages and how vital mobile communication is.

I am beginning to wonder if this may be part of why 4.5 is so slow to release. Does RIM foresee a problem handling all the media related bandwidth that would be flying around as millions of consumers enjoy the data heavy features (such as streaming)?
