Nokia, Apple, RIM and others agree on micro-USB phone charger standard

Ok this is for the Europe Market but....Could the USA be next? We can only hope! As stated in the article, "One charger for any mobile phone... where's the catch?"

    From EndgadgetMobile

"While the free-market works pretty well when, uh, left alone to be free, sometimes it needs a push from a visible hand. Case in point, phone chargers, at the moment some 30 different types of chargers are used on handsets throughout Europe. Today, the European Commission received industry backing of its phone charger standard that relies on a micro-USB socket...."

Actually for once the US is ahead of the game. If I recall correctly, the manufacturers (with the exception of Apple and Palm) had agreed at last year's CTIA show to standardize on the micro-usb charger (my timing may be off). We are already seeing products coming from Kyocera, ZTE, Samsung, Sanyo, Nokia, BB, and Motorola. Most people haven't noticed because they did this quietly here.

Good Lord - at last...until, of course, someone invents another one, and then it's back to square one again!

I Agree!! Seriously, it's about time!
This way we can finally get one regular charger, one usb charger, one car charger and call it a day. [ or one usb charger and use that everywhere w/ car + wall power modules =) ]

I am so tired of having to always find the right charger, with the right usb cable. With apple + motorola at least it has been relatively standard, but I remember the Treo, the Blackjack...ughh.

All the samsung phones I think have a different charger. Secretly, Samsung adds or subtracts one pin on every charger just to make it more "interesting" (/ difficult)

Forgot to add -- I read at least 4 articles today that said it's a "mini" usb, instead of micro. Where is this confusion coming from? It's most definitely micro-usb.

I've been working for an AT&T dealer for around two years now andwe've had 4 different chargers for the Samsungs. Including one that only fit one model.

Good find Gary. I hope the providers get on board. I've got a dozen, standard RIM chargers (87xx,81xx,83xx), but guess what? None of them, as all 8900 owners know, fit my new Curve! What's up RIM? The only models that take the new charger are the pearl flip and the 8900. Surprise! Anyone need some chargers? Lol.

After I got my 8900 I did find that you can buy the mini to micro usb adapters at AT&T stores for $9.95. I know they are only a couple of bucks on ebay but I am an instant gratification guy

As Gary mentioned, there is a convertor that is available (I use one on the end of my USB cable to be able to handle multiple different phones without having to unplug the cable) but I think the only manufacturer that makes one or even provides one with any phone is Motorola.
