    New 8300, 8320 & 8820 BlackBerry to Help RIM's Profits in Q4

    More about the 8820 here...

BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd. reports its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings Wednesday. The following is a summary of key developments and analyst commentary related to the period.

ANALYST TAKE: In an April 4 note to clients, Oppenheimer analyst Lawrence Harris said he expects the company to beat Wall Street estimates.

Harris, who rates the stock at "Neutral," sees profit of $1.02 per share for the quarter and revenue of $950 million. He thinks RIM will have sold about 2.1 million devices during the period, and said the 8800's retail sell-through rates have been strong. "Demand for the 8800 appears to be greater than the Pearl 8100," he wrote.

RBC Capital Markets analyst Mike Abramsky, who rates the stock "Outperform," wrote in a Feb. 26 client note that he also expects RIM to report earnings above Street estimates.

WHAT'S AHEAD: Analysts are expecting the smartphone company to come out with new models and colors this spring. They also anticipate RIM will incorporate different technologies, such as CDMA and EV-DO, into upcoming phones.

Oppenheimer's Harris raised his 2008 and 2009 earnings per share estimates for the company, due to the expected launch of several new smartphones, including the Daytona 8300/8320 this spring. He expects the T-Mobile version of the 8320 will include Wi-Fi, while the AT&T model will stick with the EDGE network.

Harris also sees the company unleashing several other models, including the Cyclone. He anticipates the Cyclone will be a world smartphone, likely based on the 8800's platform, that operates over Verizon's CDMA network here in the U.S.

RBC's Abramsky also raised estimates in anticipation of the new phones, saying he's seeing "unexpectedly strong pent-up demand for RIM's new handhelds," which he thinks will ship during the second quarter.

Abramsky believes RIM's strong shipment, subscriber and sales momentum will beat out valuation concerns. This drive also could help soften the blow that upcoming products, such as Apple's iPhone, have on RIM.

You must be one of those "not paid too well" employees of Cingular/ATT, I hear T-Mobile is hiring.

Tell us what you really think, Overboost. How was it working for AT&T? :-)
