Interesting analysis here from Computerworld. We all know that that Smartphones dominate mobile sales, and we see traditional PC makers entering into the smartphone world...but will smartphones really overtake PC's in sales?

"Smartphone sales will surpass worldwide PC sales by the end of 2011, according to a new report. The report, by RBC analyst Mike Abramsky, estimates that by that time shipments of both will be approaching 400 million a year.
Smartphone sales are on the increase, with standard mobile sales decreasing, which is pushing PC makers, such as Apple, Dell, Acer and Microsoft into the lucrative arena....." [Read More]

I guess it's no surprise to see reports like this one. PC's have become the bottom of the barrel and NetBooks help bring them down even more. They are throw away devices almost anymore when you look at the amount of low end PC's that can be purchased.
Phones tend to be less expensive, easier to use and universal to everyone. Phones are getting better and better daily while PC's are stuck running (insert opinion) Windows.

If and when I have the amount of ram, processor speed, and HD capacity as one of my computers I WILL rely soley on it and will cease to use my PC for anything.

Heck we are already close we are already running phones like the iPhone 3GS which are packing specs similar to a top of the line computer from 10 yrs ago in a device probably 30 times smaller.

These days its all about portability. My pc has been down for months and since I've been using smartphones I haven't been in a rush to get it fixed.

Right now in my house there are 2 laptops that get hours of use daily, a desktop that I rarely use anymore and 2 blackberry smartphones that also get heavy use. I love the convenience and portability of a smartphone, love the new technology that makes them better and better all the time. But I also love a full sized keyboard and large screen too much to dump my laptop for good.

It's the same at our house too. These phones come in handy when I haven't been able to use a laptop. Love the convenience and portability.

Convenience and portability seem to be the key words. Another indicator of this trend is that even with the economic downturn we have been in, sales on smart phones have done well.

When my laptop is down, I'm glad I have my BlackBerry to back me up during those times, but the need for a PC is still there: I love to play games, the type that require high end processors, graphic cards, etc., that a smartphone cannot give me. I don't think I'd ever own a desktop PC anymore because I love the easy portability with a notebook or netbook, and nowadays you can get the same power in a net or notebook that you can in a desktop.

The smartphone will definitely dominate the market and more and more people will have one, probably more then computer users. But the need for a full-powered high graphics PC is still there and always will be until they find a way to replace that.

Yea Ill always need a tower. spartphones are just that, phones with an a bunch of options, they arent meant to be a tower replacement, and niether are netbooks, a netbook is just a bigger higher end sidekick with a few more features. I build pcs, try playing crysis on decent or low grapics mode on a netbook, you'll like 2- 10fps if it will even play lol. Netbooks are just meant to check email type, browse the web and maybe watch the occasional streaming movie seeing as most netbooks dont have an optical drive. Besides any person that doesnt know jack about anything on a pc can learn the basics on how to use a smartphone. You cant compare pcs netbooks and smartphones, all it will show is that the majority of people will follow the latest trend and it doesnt even mean that they utilize what they have .A large percentage of the latest smartphone newcommers dont even use 40% of the smartphones features. I know several people alone that have berries and iphones and dont use calendars, tasks, music, movies and things of the like. They barely have the email option only cuz the guy that sold it to them did it for them, they dont even want to learn how to do it themselves. Very sad indeed. I even know one guy that doesnt use anything not even sms on his phones but he has to have the latest phones, he even changes phones every 3 months. He even has a high end laptop that he just uses for surfing the internet, nothing more.

The day my phone comes with an incorporated overhead projector which will enable me to do presentations and watch movies from it that'll be the day I can say it's time for me to trash my pc. Until then my smartphone is just that a smartphone calendar/mms/agenda/text/calls...
