Intel to Offer New Smartphone Platform: Linux-Based "Moblin OS"

The Intel Moorestown platform will begin to appear in devices later this year. Intel says that the new mobile Internet device (MID) platform will be launching during the first half of 2010, and should begin appearing in consumer devices on the market as early as the third quarter.

At CES, Intel flaunted a host of prototypes and designs, including units from Aava Mobile, Inventec, Open Peak, LG and others. Intel also promises that the Moorestown platform will be a faster and more efficient version of the Atom CPU computing platform. Running Intel’s Moblin OS (Linux based), the platform may become a serious competitor in the smartphone market.

Intel says that the Moorestown is designed to idle using less power than the Atom or other processors - up to 50 times less! It will also feature HD video, with the ability to record 720p HD and playback 1080p HD.

metalwraith you and I are in the same boat! I'm a huge Linux (Ubuntu, Fedora) fan, and I've been craving the Android OS for a while now. I still have the 8100 Pearl...and this thing is just painful to use on a daily basis
