Immigration Canada cracks down on BB addicts.

Immigration Canada calls for BlackBerry blackout

Citizen and Immigration Canada wants its employees to break their BlackBerry habits.

The hand-held, Canadian-made electronic devices that let workers send and receive emails day or night have become a staple of professional life. Many workers -- and their bosses -- say they're an easy way to stay connected to the office without actually being there.

But there are concerns that rather than giving employees more flexibility and freedom, they've actually tethered them to their work. Critics say that could lead to worker dissatisfaction.

So, Immigration Canada's Deputy Minister, Richard Fadden, has sent out a new directive to the department's employees: no more BlackBerry use overnight, weekends, or holidays. He's also asking that BlackBerries be banned from meetings.

Yeah sure they can keep them from using their work BB, but not their personal ones though.

You don't want to move to Canada...their cell plans suck, they are overly expensive, and instead of leaning towards a 1 year contract like tmobile, they are at 3 years. If you are willing to pay $250-300 for a BB with a 3 year contract, and a $75-100 monthly plan...then go, but otherwise, stay here

About the post: I love my BB and I actually like staying in touch as things happen, vs having to read 30 or so emails on Mondays...plus, I can't see how they would enforce this for personal devices.

Sounds to me that this is aiming towards the business end of blackberry usage and not personal use. Immigration Canada's Deputy Minister is seeming to try to stop people from doing work on there blackberries after they have left work for the day and let people enjoy there time off.

That may have been true a couple of years ago but not now. I got my Pearl for free, yes I did sign a 3 year contract but that does not bother me. And my monthly plan is $45.00 voice plus unlimited email and web. I've also got free text messaging, free voice mail and free caller display for the term of the contract.

Canada is an awesome country to live in... each country has their own set of problems... Pluses and minuses... lol too many to even attempt to list
From what I understand from the article is that the employers of workers from IMMIGRATION CANADA want to limit their access to work via their work provided bb after work hours... which is completely understandable. It's not saying that the Government of Canada is limiting all Canadians or immigrants access to their blackberries... hope that makes sense...
