    iDEN is not dead...

Today I saw at least 3 new iDEN phones for Sprint-Nextel. These models are all currently in production for Moto International, however will be "redone" if you will for iDEN in the states on Sprint - Nextel service.

These are not going to be hpptt phones, simply iden ptt. The i335 and the i570 are two that caught my eye. The i335 releasing 11-23-2007 and the i570 January or so. zThere is also a new color i880 releasing, its a quite nice grey.

Just thought I would share this.

It is dying out. When Sprint merged with Nextel, thier long term goals included the death of iDen, but that was to happen over a 10 year or so plan according to the Sprint and Nextel reps we talked to. Of course that applies here to the states only.

    Integrated Digital Enhanced Network
    or
    Integrated Dispatch Enhanced Network

iDEN is a TDMA-based digital wireless standard designed to work in special frequencies originally designated for analog Specialized Mobile Radio (SMR) networks. iDEN was invented by Motorola, who remains the primary manufacturer of iDEN devices.

iDEN provides several unique features, including integrated push-to-talk (PTT) walkie-talkie capability.

iDEN is used in the U.S. by Nextel and Southern LINC.

Newer iDEN phones use a SIM card that is compatible with GSM phones for overseas roaming. However, iDEN is a very different standard from GSM. Most iDEN phones are not compatible with GSM networks, and GSM phones are not compatible with iDEN networks.

    Definition gleamed from Phone Scoop.

My understanding is that Sprint is supposedly migrating their Nextel customers to the Sprint side, and the Federal Government has plans to buy the iDen network to use for themselves.

I have worked with Nextel in Peru, which hasn't been bought by Sprint, and its great but RIM will not make a new BB for Nextel South America. Nectel Peru hs comissioned a BB-type phone, running on BB OS but it will not be ready for at least 1 year.
I can't wait that long so I am switching carriers and getting a 8310.

As far as I know, it will only be available in Peru, since Sprint is getting rid of iDen
