Google's 'My Location' Maps Service on BlackBerry: Smaller is Better!

Google's 'My Location' just got better for all the applications that use Google's geolocation service!

Don't have Goolge Maps? Download OTA here: m.google.com/gmm

With today's launch, your location estimate will be centered closer to your true location, and Google has also improved the calculation of just how good the estimate is.

When Google originally launched the "blue circle" on Google Maps for mobile, the circle usually stayed the same size no matter if you were in downtown Manhattan or rural Iowa. Now, the next time you're using Google Maps in downtown Manhattan, expect to see a much smaller circle that's also far more accurate.

Conversely, when you're in a lightly populated area like rural Iowa, expect to see a much larger circle which also happens to be centered closer to your true location.

Check out the screenshots (above-right) to get a better idea of the before and after effects of today's change.

If you already have Google Maps installed on your BlackBerry, there's actually nothing you need to do to start enjoying the new improvements to My Location. The geolocation service automatically benefits from today's launch. Enjoy!

In November 2007 Google launched My Location on Google Maps for mobile which uses Google's database of cell towers to determine approximate location. And just last week we announced Mobile Search with My Location, powered by the Gears Geolocation API.

WOW ..it really does work. went from 1700m radius down to 800 ... and i just checked . Today it put me two blocks away from my actual location ... which is SWEEEEETTT!! especially since i am one of those Verizon step-children that aren't allowed to play with GPS for free. lol

    Google Maps 2.2.3

I just went to the link Hayden provided, and the dl is for 2.2.3 of Google Maps, which upgraded my 2.2.2.

That said, I still have a huge circle, and location within 2000 meters on my 8320. The location is exactly correct, though.

I'm at 900 meters here in Savannah, GA, but then again I have no idea what my circle was prior to this. While I'm in town at least as long as it's close it's fine, since I know my way around my own town better than anyone. I pretty much only use it here to point out locations to tourists about once a week.

'reading' above. Note that 1) this is NOT a software upgrade. It's part of the OTA service. 2) This update will not improve all areas. Thanks for confirming the above mentioned.

I'm going to the site and it's only listing 2.2.2 which takes away the Voice Search. 2.2.3 isn't there. Is there a way someone can shoot me a link?
