Google Maps "My Location" for BlackBerry Now Supports Wi-Fi

Today, Google is taking another step toward the goal of shrinking that magical blue circle, with the release of My Location with Wi-Fi, which will provide even greater accuracy when you use a device with Wi-Fi. The premise is similar to what Google does with cell tower information: information transmitted by nearby Wi-Fi access points is used to pinpoint your location. Since the range of a Wi-Fi access point is smaller than that of a cell phone tower, this often results in a much more accurate position.

So how can you start enjoying this Wi-Fi goodness? If you have a Wi-Fi enabled BlackBerry, please download the latest version of Google Maps for mobile.

Wi-Fi-based location is available in many major cities around the world, but coverage and accuracy will vary. Expect it to improve over time as more people use it.

Anyone able to actually download the new version? The site tries to give me version 2.3.1, which I downloaded a month ago.

I imagine it will work like the maps on the iPhone and iPod Touch. It's scary accurate. It put the dot right on top of my apartment.

I also have 2.3.1 which appears to be the latest version. Maybe they (Google) simply added the wi-fi technology to the method they use to provide the locations. Is that possible?

After all, it DOES say in Hayden's post, “…information transmitted by nearby Wi-Fi access points is used to pinpoint your location.”

If that's true, I don't see any increase in accuracy yet.

It was just a thought - I don't have a wi-fi data plan any more so I can't determine whether that's a fact or not. I have GPS on my 8330 and it's a pinpoint location - I'm still interest in the wi-fi though - I still use my 8320 to browse the internet and make calls on my "to-go" account.
