Funny debate on the benefits of BlackBerry

SARASOTA -- As city commissioners spent the weekend reviewing proposed city budgets, one rising cost jumped out.

For some departments, cell phone charges were projected to double. Or even quadruple. Commissioner Mary Anne Servian questioned whether staffers were getting gold-plated cell phones.

The answer was that nearly 70 BlackBerry devices have been issued to city leaders and employees. Many of the handheld devices have been given out in the last year or so.

The city's abundance of BlackBerrys, which can be used to make phone calls, check e-mail or visit Web sites, prompted elected officials to question who needs them.

"We have way too many people with BlackBerrys," said Servian, whose BlackBerry bill is paid in part by the city. -- Read More

You can't prove productivity to the voters! Trust me, I've been there. It's not pretty.

Maybe they have VERIZON with $50 Data plan LOL

Either that or they are letting the user choose a service and plan, thereby eliminating the typical FREE calls between Network Callers...

C'mon there is a way to budget this correctly, but then again any gov't correctly budgeting a service is a long shot, We will be BB'ing eachother from MARS before that happens

    It's near BLASPHEMY!

Why not take away the desktop computer, which should only be used for email anyway, and replace with a BB on a BES which disables web surfing.

That's the best way to go!

~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~Thats to funny. Wonder how much my local goverment spends here in Wichita. It seems they all have what looks like a 7290. Except our Mayor. He has a 8700g. I know, it looks identical to mine. Wonder what us taxpayers are paying for these.

Well, lets see, if they pay $72 for a hammer, I would guess they are paying about $900 for a blackberry.

Vice Mayor Danny Bilyeu, who's been using a city BlackBerry on a trial basis, said he kind of likes to "feel a little tickle on my side" when he gets an e-mail. Still, he's thinking about giving his BlackBerry to someone who needs it.

"Who really needs 'em?" he asked. "We all got computers."

What little tickle is he referring to? LOL

At work I see people BB'ing while sitting on the john. I think to myself, you can wash your hands, what do they do with their BB's?

I wish the local government used them here. We would be better off. They never know when pump stations go down...... and not the normal water to the sink ones.... think what leaves the bathroom ones.... They are just getting set up to get automated signals sent to the right people. And with the hurricanes in FL... what kind of fools are they? It is a MUST in the modern world. I would be terrified to hear my city talking that way. Good thing I will never move south.
