Fiercemobilecontent.com: More than 17 percent of U.S. smartphone users who installed mobile applications in 2008 spent between $100 and $499 on premium apps according to a new consumer report conducted by ABI Research. The study, conducted in November 2008 among 235 U.S. smartphone owners, contends that the level of spending is particularly significant given the low price point of most applications: A chart published in late November by news site EdibleApple.com noted that among the 9,700 or so iPhone and iPod touch apps available in Apple's App Store at that time, about a third are priced at 99 cents. More than 2,000 App Store downloads are free, and close to 1,500 are priced at $1.99 each.

On iTunes, perhaps, but not for my phone. That may change though very, very soon...

The article should have been 20% of other smart phone users and 90% of Iphone users. Clearly apple has an app to tell the users how much they spend on app per year.....

Not really apps, I bought a few premium games though. And I did buy close to $200 worth of mp3s off Amazon.

I want to know who spends $499 on apps?

The only thing I can think of are apps like the infamous 'I am rich' app for the iPhone which was $999. Even though only a few people bought it (i think less than 50) this would have a huge impact on these numbers.

Wow i just realized ive spent $70 on apps in the last two months for my i-touch. I can see spending that much over a year easy.

I have spent way more than $100 on apps for my BB's, SideKicks, and iPods.
