Cheaper 3g iPhone will "cost you" more over time

The original iPhone had to deal with consumer sticker shock over its $499 and $599 price tag, which it overcame through great word of mouth and a price cut to $400. The challenge for its cheaper and more mainstream-minded successor, the $199 and $299 iPhone 3G, will be to get people to pay the increased monthly voice and data plans, which raise the cost of ownership over two years to more than the original iPhone.

Apple's iPhone 3G, which goes on sale Friday at 8 a.m., will be sold in packages starting at $70 a month for 450 anytime voice minutes and unlimited data with the option to pay another $5 a month for 200 text messages. A similar package for the original iPhone, with its slower data speeds, was $60 a month, including 200 text messages.

Over the course of a two-year contract, the least an original iPhone user paid was $1,839 for hardware and monthly fees. The same base package including text messages for the iPhone 3G is $1,999.

    That's why I hate AT&T.......They are a bunch of hoarding S.O.B's.

This is ridicules; come to think of it, we all are paying a lot of money for cell phones. At the end of the year i have spent $1,476.......Ouch.....

Still, compared to what I pay for data for my BB that is insane.

Does anyone know if other carriers are slated to have similar monthly prices or if this is just an AT&T thing?

I'm not planning on buying an iPhone, I just want something else to throw in the face of my friends when a BB/iPhone debate sparks up.

People don't care, they go crazy for the iPhone no matter how much it will cost them in the future.

I was just reading on several other sites that even Apple is fighting Rogers over this. They are pulling their large supply of phones and sending them to Europe instead. Good for Apple!

I had read that too, and it has been confirmed! Apple isn't too happy with Rogers at all!

Hopefully many Canadians will boycott the Iphone so that Rogers/Fido will feel it and be forced to lower their pricing.

I'm afraid At&t's site indicates the same prohibitive rates. $115 for only 800 minutes on a phone is preposterous. I don't know how many individuals and small businesses would subject themselves to getting fleeced like that.
We can only hope that it's not inherent to a 3G gouge which would affect Blackberry users too.

RIM directly controls their data service pricing, any changes to that would be the responsibility of RIM.

Listen, I love my bb too, but this 'inflated' cost of ownership of the new iphone 3g seems like you are just looking for any reason to hate on the iphone. I pay nearly the same for 400mins,a text bundle and unlimited data on tmobile. There are other, far more valid arguments for the bb, don't rely on something petty like this.

Like I always tell my friends and colleagues, if your into showing off your device then go with the iPhone but soon enough everyone's going to have one by the looks of it. If you want efficiency and the confidence in getting the job done quick and easy, then go with a blackberry.

I'm enjoying the Unlimited EVERYTHING plan with VZW, $150 for unlimited minutes, txt, data, whatever.

    Just no GPS

ETA: I concur with the above post that pricing isn't an argument I use in BB vs. iPhone
