    BlackBerry Storm Delay, No Surprise

After using the Storm at the BlackBerry Developer Conference, within 5 mins it was clear to me that the device was in no way ready for prime time. Is it brilliant? Yes, but at that point the OS responded far too slow, to the degree that it cast a large shadow over the brilliance of the Storm. It was plagued with the hourglass/busy icon and because of it one Verizon rep said he had to "hard reset the Storm almost every hour for a clean demo" to Conference attendees.

Simon from intomobile.com tried to take a photo of me with the Storm and after clicking to snap the pic, the OS was so slow/froze that it took a shot of the floor instead as he lowered his hand several seconds after waiting for the flash to go off.

It's clear that RIM has a lot riding on the Storm and thus anxious to get it out the door. Will it be a great device? YES! However, the response time and ease of navigation at that point did not match the iPhone, ONLY because of the OS response being sluggish. This is minor moving forward as my old Curve 8320 responds faster on 4.5 OS than it did on 4.2 OS. So lets hope for OS improvements before launch.

I did not expect a perfect device at the Conference, but the fact that it was on display set an expectation that it would function 'well' and show off it's capabilities. When asked my opinion, I said at the conference that the Storm would be delayed because I could not see the OS improved in a few weeks or it would have already been fixed and installed. I also have a strong feeling that we should expect several minor to major Storm OS updates days or weeks after the official launch.

I wish more attention would be given to the replacement Curve (Javelin). I wouldn't be surprised if it outsells the Bold.

Note: the Storm at the Conference was Beta and no doubt the final release will have a new OS that will be more efficient and stable.

The question is, will it be the major improvement "at launch" that's needed for the user experience to be brilliant?! I think not.

How can it be delayed with no release date?!

Anyhoo they have until Dec. 22, that's my upgrade day no excuses. Plus it makes the perfect Christmas present, to me!

Terrific, if not somewhat disappointing article hayden,
I too hope that RIM does a good job on the Javelin, as I'm with you in thinking that it will sell very well. In addition, if it performs well, then that will dispel some of the skepticism over RIM's performance lately. These delays have not helped them in the least, and they need to get this behind them. If they would get back on track and not talk about release dates, even if only projected, on new devices until they are far enough along to predict with accuracy, then they will certainly improve their credibility.

That's cutting it extremely close! But I suppose it would be acceptable, at least for me. All the other potential Stormers might be a little umm....not happy about such a long wait.

Even though I am not currently a Verizon customer, I'm very happy to see them get the new Storm. Competition is the cornerstone of innovation, and while Verizon is basically a service company, nonetheless I feel they deserve this opportunity to make a difference in how new BlackBerrys are rolled out. Done right it may be just the jab, that AT&T deserves after the rather complacent way they treated the Bold intro. Time will tell.

Thanks for the brief review Hayden, I have a feeling the device will in fact be buggy at launch, just as the 8100 was when it first launched. Remember all the 911 calls people made from their pockets? lol

I will buy this device and I hope that there will be Major OS upgrades within 30 days of my purchase. I will give it a month for Verizon (or me if I use another carriers updated OS) to iron out the bugs, if it doesn't work, I'll take it back and wait for the solid working device sometime down the road.

This is a huge gamble for RIM and it could make or break them right now in my opinion. There were rumors about Micro$oft buying them out, which we all would hate, but if this "next gen" device doesn't cut it, I could see RIM really up for grabs and who knows what that future would mean. RIM needs to step up their game and strong arm carriers into opening the devices up more. Let features such as wifi and GPS be standard accross the board for all devices.

If they want to compete with the explosion of iPhones, they really need to push out solid working devices to all carriers with as many features as possible.

Hey Hayden - I had the same reaction when I played with it at the conference (nice talking with you there BTW). I'd like to see Storm be able to really compete against the iPhone, but it'll need to become much more robust before that happens. In my very humble opinion, they shouldn't start selling it until it's *really* ready (Which is a drag since I'm waiting on one myself :-D). If they put it out too soon, I don't think they'll win any consumer crowd converts.

Also, I think RIM needs to upgrade the default apps - having the old apps in there is like putting truck wheels on a Ferrari.
