BlackBerry 9000 to come in cheaper, 3G-less version?!

The BlackBerry 9000 had a rumored high selling price. Now it looks like RIM may launch a 3G-less BlackBerry 9000. As far as design I think I prefer this leaked concept over the 3G 9000.

If it is considerably cheaper I could see it because the thing is already way too expensive.

9000 w/ 3G Spawns Dragons from the convenience key

9000 w/out 3G Spawns Fairies from the convenience key.

Its a user preference thing I guess.

    I for one, prefer Dragons.

I would get the curve at a really good price. Depending on what phone company you are with, you might have to wait up to six months after it is released to get a 9000 (unless you by one at full priced or on ebay and unlock it).

RIM may be looking at 3G as an added feature; in that vein then, they are not doing anything different than they do now, offering the same model with different features across be it GPS, WiFi or in this case, 3G: call it the 9040c (as in cheap).

This could be 9000 version for another carrier as well, those that don't offer 3G as of now.

Right you are. For those looking to upgrade, well you can get 3G. If you're looking to come in to the BB family or you finally decided to update that RIM 850, and you don't see the need for 3G, here you go as well.

As an aside, I found this mentioned in the Wikipedia entry for Blackberry, take it as you wish

    quote
    "Criticism

RIM has been criticized for not including 3G/UMTS on any models other than the 8700 series. However, email delivery on 3G units is often slower than EDGE and even GPRS, as emails are broken down into very small packets, each with its own encryption key. The UMTS networks are more suited for streaming media, so for BES/BIS email delivery there is little or no advantage.[9] On the other hand, new multimedia features, like the ability to email large attachments such as camera-phone photos, as well as the ability to tether the BlackBerry as a modem for laptop, provide a compelling reason to add 3G support to future BlackBerry smartphones, provided they can keep EDGE support for times when 3G is not favourable...."
