Thumbs up BerryStore Beta - A 3rd Party BlackBerry App Store?

October 6th, 2008 by Ronen Halevy

Jason just let me know about an interesting new development. Turns out that while RIM’s application store got outed BerryStore managed to keep a tight wrap on their store. I was more hoping for RIM to replicate the better qualities in Apple’s app store but already RIM has a potential competitor.
BerryStore just released a public beta of their on device app store. Essentially you install the BerryStore application on your BlackBerry and it will help you find, install, & review applications. Pretty cool but not really game changing. On the other hand BerryStore has some unique features going for it that might make it a success.
At first I thought this kind of sounded like Handango’s InHand application but then I noticed a few differences. First of all currently the BerryStore is only for free applications or free trials. They don’t support selling applications but they are working on it. Second of all the BerryStore leaves it up to developers to let the store know about their applications. They teach you how to place a XML file which they call an appcast on your server that lets the BerryStore know the latest version of your application. You then submit the URL of your appcast and your good to go. The BerryStore will review your application but all they check is if your application correctly downloads and installs, does not contain adult content, or damage users phones.
Sadly as you can see to the left their latest Beta version 0.9.36 does not work on the Bold… Check it out at www.berrystore.com and let us know what you think in the comments! If anybody manages to get this working please snap some screenshots.

Pretty interesting. Seems like it could have great potential. Its very clean and straight to the point with simple explanations of each app. Also user reviews are available which can help a lot. Lastly you can uninstall apps from the same place you downloaded it! That's a hott feature. Very google like.
