AdMob Quarterly Report: Android Numbers Almost Doubled Again

I spotted a tweet this morning about AdMob's latest quarterly report which shows Android numbers are still steadily climbing, nearly doubling from the previous quarter.

"Today we released the December edition of our Mobile Metrics report, our monthly look at the data flowing through our network. This month we look at several key metrics including manufacturer share, operating system share, top devices, and top smartphones for each region in our network. At a glance, the data shows large regional differences in the devices that are accessing the mobile web.

Remember AdMob data is based on the usage of mobile sites and apps, which is very different than if you were to look at estimates of device sales from Gartner, IDC, or your favorite Wall Street analyst. For those new to the Metrics report, visit this blog post for details on the report methodology."

It looks like Apple's iPhone is holding steady but some of the other platforms lost some ground. The Motorola DROID had a big part in this increase as shown by it's spot on this list, but overall, 7 of the 10 are Android devices:

What do you think of this method of tracking and what the numbers mean compared to others such as device sales?

Check out the full PDF for more charts and details.

That doesn't surprise me at all. Android software is very easy to get use to for the average consumer. Seems like every carrier is trying to jump into the android market.

Motorola Droid is the main reason for the strong sales.

    Considering from above:

Remember AdMob data is based on the usage of mobile sites and apps

The Chart fits but the iPhone has been around longer and of course there are 150K of Apps.

So .................... meaningless. Maybe next year at this time it could be worthwhile to look at after Android has been given time to mature a little bit with Apps and sales.

Maybe this data is part of the reason Google recently acquired Admob.

The bottom line is Android is one of the best things to happen in the smartphone space in years. Anything that creates the attention Android has, makes other companies get off their duff and keep developing.
