Wifi is a way to connect to the internet without using your data plan. You just have to be in a location that has the signal for you to pick up.

    i have the same question.

so if you have a wifi signal the phone will not use data, just wifi.

so i could send and receive pictures, etc. without getting charged for data usage?

Wifi gives you the ability to surf the internet at far greater speeds then standard mobile internet setups. You can use opera or look at EBay with ease. Use Pinstack fast, well done as much as you would normally do from your pc or laptop.
I thought the same when I had my 8120 but now couldn't do without it!!

so does wifi "overrule" data services? as in the phone will use the wifi and not data when it is available

I've set my BB to use wifi before data. Personally I tell if wifi or data is being used by the speed!

Wifi is the best way to surf so that you don't have to pay for data, and if you don't have a data plan. Remember though, things like SMS, MMS, and other network relying features require the use of the regular network, not internet. I hope that helps clarify a few things for you.

Options -> mobile network -> "connection preference" should be set to "wifi preferred"

Hi im also new to this and would like to know how do I disable data completely through my carrier? I want to use wifi only for data and if no wifi is available, use nothing. I checked on the phone and I cant seem to do this? Setting it to wifi only disables using the cell phone for phone calls off the network.

Is this something I have to call my provider and tell them to disable?

Sorry for the long delay in replying. Yes, the best way to disable the data is to have your carrier put a data block on your account. If it works, you'll see lower case "edge" in the top right corner. .

Good luck and merry christmas to everyone. :-D

Also you can go to options>mobile network and turn data services off and you can open your browser and go to options and set browser to wifi

You can with T-Mobile. They have a service called "HotSpot Calling" that's like $5 a month and allows you to make calls over a Wi-Fi connection if it can go UMA. This way it doesn't come off of your minutes, but you have to consider how often you're near a good Wi-Fi connection and need to make calls.
