    Re: White Screen

I would have to say that the BB is dead... Do not tell your carrier that you dropped the BB, they will not warranty that device. Good Luck

well alright, since you want to ask this question again the screen is not connected to the key pad, ive had pearls apart with the screen of and you still can get the keypad to light up and make noises when you dial.

    Re: dead screen i think

Sounds like more than a screen. Have you pulled the battery (with the phone on) and replaced to see if that resets? You can also download the screen shooter utility in our Download section and take a picture of what the screen would look like if you could see it.

I would think you would start with an Operating System (device software) installation to see if that corrects the issue. Otherwise it is most likely hardware .

You will need desktop manager and a newer OS for your 8100 installed on your desktop in order to proceed. You can use any carriers OS if you delete the vendor.alx file after you install on your desktop...

Ok I see there is more than one thread you have going (I suspected from Jeffs posts that I was missing something)....

Dropped and non responsive does not sound good...I would still suggest the OS install. If that does not work you are looking at a hardware repair.

    Re: dead screen i think

I had this happen to me today and found this thread (and the forum) via Google.

I dropped my phone at lunch - nothing severe, it literally fell the distance from the top of the seat in the booth I was in, and WHAMMO, I pick up the phone, the screen has a bunch of bars going across it, looks FUBAR'd.

First instinct was to pull the battery to power cycle it - no dice. When I plugged in the battery, the red LED at front/top looked half-lit, but no screen and no backlighting on the keypad.

I went to eBay to hunt prices. Pearl 8100 is still around $250, unfortunately. If it was $100, I'da just bought a new phone and hacked at this later, but ... I refuse to pay $99 and commit to a contract, or pay $250 new.

    A-hacking we go ...

I already had my phone take a dump previously in a botched OS upgrade, and I used JL_Cmder to wipe and re-load (computer wouldn't recognize it after botched upgrade).

So I figure, wtf, why not plug it in and see if it shows as a removeable disk?

So I plug it in, Device Manager in Windows shows "Blackberry device" under the USB tree...IT IS ALIVE!

I used the forum (thanks, GaryF, you got a referral from my registration ) to determine how to reinstall the OS. Installing the traditional way (thread is linked here somewhere) did nothing.

To get the OS to reinstall, I had to:
-> Install Blackberry Device Manager (BDM).
-> Install the OS upgrade from T-Mo.
    -> Remove the battery.
-> Open BDM, plug in the USB cable to BB8100.
    -> Double-click Application Loader.
-> Choose the PIN for my BB.
-> Choose the option to upgrade everything (this was offered with a stern warning).
-> Install the battery and click "finish".
-> It took approximately 15 minutes to complete.

BUT, still did not fix my problem! After the successful reload, I still had no picture on the screen and no buttons.

Having previous experience with JL_cmder in the past, I went ahead and downloaded it again. Opened it up, plugged up the BB8100 with the battery installed, and ... *GULP* .... wiped it again, completely. I *was* able to backup the data on the device before doing this.

After wiping, I repeated the previous process. At the point of "Load Java Applications", the screen has miraculously turned on, and I have a white screen with a Blackberry pictured on the left, a computer desktop pictured on the right, and "transfer" arrows between them.

It has taken almost 25 minutes now to get to this point. I expect at this rate, it is going to take nearly 45 mins to completely reload. But ... as long as I have full usage of my BB, I don't care.

First place I'm headed after this is across the street to the new T-Mo store and getting insurance on my phone.

By all means, YMMV, but I at least wanted to register, post another case of this occuring, thank GaryF for the suggestions, and possibly help any other person who ever views this thread in the future who has this same symptom of "drop phone/screen blank/no backlights/keypresses make no noise and have no function".

I'll post back again if this process of wiping and reinstalling doesn't help.

I want to also be clear - unlike other people out there who've had problems with their BB "not being recognized", that was never one of my symptoms - this is probably the strangest thing I've ever seen out of this device or any other device, and I've seen a LOT of weird crap (I work with embedded systems for a living)

    Re: dead screen i think

    BTW -

I'm still utterly confused how DROPPING my phone would cause hardware-like problems? This thing doesn't have a hard drive in it ... so I don't get how dropping the damned thing would make both the screen AND the backlights and keypad to go out. Nor does it explain why they magically came back after wiping the stupid thing.

Like I said, w eirdest thing I've ever seen.
