~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~ it depends on what plan you have. Do you have unlimited data?

Your voice dialing plan is totally separate from your Data Plan. AT&T does not have an unlimited voice plan, but all of the Blackberry Data Plans are unlimited data. Whether or not you want messaging is another decision that will potentially add cost. You are looking at $40/mo. for a voice plan, $30/mo. Blackberry Data, $4.95/mo. for 1500 messages per month at the minimum plan levels offered by AT&T.

Once you have all of your voice, data, and messaging plans squared away, the apps for your phone range from free to more money. A lot of really useful, really cool apps are free, however. Google Mobile Apps, Viigo RSS Reader, Berry411 and a bunch of others are free.

One app that you'll have to buy ($20 or $30 depending on the version you choose) that I highly recommend is JiveTalk. It is an IM client that lets you use Yahoo Messenger, Google Talk, or AIM.

    Welcome to the Stacks.

No JiveTalk is a one time only purchase. It has a 30 day evaluation, so you don't have to buy it right away.

No problem, we all started out brand new at some point. (some of us not so long ago, too)

haha, ok cool. Yah i was just looking at that and i want it lol.
But im all confused on the part that reads:

"- BlackBerry Data Service, with access to either BES, BIS, or your carrier's TCP gateway.
For frequent usage, it is recommended that you have an unlimited data plan."

i cant use it unless i have a data service?

i highly recommend you get a data plan asap. there is no joy in owning a blackberry and not having a data plan.

pretty much anything that has to do with connecting to the internet will require a data plan. yes, that includes all the apps that latufu posted.

Re: Whats free and whats not...

That's correct. But you won't be able to use any other features of the phone, either, without the data plan. (Maps, info, browsers, etc.)

$30/mo. and its unlimited data, so its pretty cheap for what you're able to do. Plus email support for up to 10 email accounts.

You're basically limited to voice, SMS, and syncing the PIM apps via USB without a data plan. No email, no internet, no maps for GPS, etc etc.

As far as the costs of other apps, it really depends on the app you're talking about. Go visit the site for the vendor and you'll find out what the cost for the app is. Some apps are free. Some aren't. GPS requires an app -- the costs associated depend on the app itself (again). There's no charge to acquire positioning data from the GPS satellites but that data is useless without maps which have to be downloaded via the internet on any BB.

The only other thing you'd really need to be concerned about is text messaging. If you don't have a package on your line then you'll get billed per sent/received text message. Be very careful with the IM apps as some use text messaging to deliver the IM's. Jivetalk doesn't which is why it was recommended to you if you're an IM user.
