    Does this help?

    Why/purpose:

Installing the DoD Root Certificates will allow your web browsers to trust the identity of websites.

Found this on Google. It may be way off but its a try.

Dod root certificate actually has to do with Department of Defense. Because the pentagon, and some other military and intelligence communties uses like 128bit and higher decryption. The DoD root cert on the blackberry is the back end of that encryption

that's what I hear j_llama. the DoD works pretty closely with RIM on security measures since they have a gov't contract.

Installing the DoD Root Certificates will allow your web browsers to trust the identity of websites, such as ONR's, whose secure communications are authenticated by the Department of Defense.

Is this required? No, however, this will help you avoid Security Alert windows when you to go to secure communication websites for various DoD agencies, including the Office of Naval Research (ONR). Future access to DoD web sites may require certificates.
