What does a capitalized "UMA" at the top corner mean?

Upper case means it's connected and functioning, just like edge vs EDGE. The presence of lower case uma, simply means the phone is UMA capable.

    A brief definition of UMA

Unlicensed Mobile Access or UMA, is the commercial name of the 3GPP Generic Access Network, or GAN standard. GAN is a telecommunication system which extends mobile services voice, data and IP Multimedia Subsystem/Session Initiation Protocol (IMS/SIP) applications over IP access networks.
The most common application of GAN is in a dual-mode handset service where subscribers can seamlessly roam and handover between local area networks and wide area networks using a GSM/Wi-Fi dual-mode mobile phone. GAN enables the convergence of mobile, fixed and Internet telephony

Thanks, that's weird though, because right now I have UMA after a new activation. Before, on my old plan, I had lowercase uma and it works fine.

If you have lower case uma and lower case edge you have limited data capability. They both indicate that you are not properly connected to the RIM data servers. A reboot usually fixes mine.

UMA functionality also depends on a proper functioning sim card. With a new activation (and sim) UMA will always work. If UMA is not working then it defaults to EDGE, so yes it will work with a lowercase uma, just not at the higher speed. In addition, sometimes it's not easy to notice the speed difference if you happen to be on a server that is very busy.

An analogy is that of the email that arrives instantly, vs the email that arrives after 30 seconds or more. Network traffic is a big factor that is easily overlooked. We are spoiled with what is usually near instant arrival, or speed as the case may be. When indeed one of the basics that we are all aware of but also falls into that category of easily overlooked, is the fact that our phones are nothing more than radios. Not hardwired......thankfully.....

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers!

so does UMA charge anything? or does it count like your minutes ... cause i recieved my 8120 from the t-mo giveaway and i am still not sure ...

i have the unlimited data plan ... so if i call with UMA ... is it a data call ??? if that makes sense...
but i do not have the hotspot plan ....

will i get charged??? cause i kinda dont want to lol ... but my service @ my house is kinda lame ... and UMA really helps ...

UMA is also know as a WiFi call.

UMA uses WiFi instead of the wireless network to make the call. It does not count as data. The calls count as regular minutes, unless you have the @home add on that gives you unlimited calls over WiFi/UMA. Then the minutes on UMA are unlimited.

You will probably notice data moves faster over UMA than regular EDGE too.

On T-Mobile when you are connected to UMA you get faster data speeds. However it also is a benefit for unlimited calling. For 10$ more monthly you can get unlimited calling everytime you are connected to uma. ~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~

unless you have the add on voice calls made over UMA will count towards your regular minutes. You will not be charged extra for them unless you go over your # of minutes for the month.

Is that right. Sheesh! This whole time I was thinking that all the minutes I was using while under UMA were all free. LOLLOL

I lowered my minutes per month due to that. Well I haven't really gone over my minutes either.
