I concur with MJWood, I had a lot of the same trouble with voice dialling until I realized that if I said the full name of the person it had a lot better recognition. Instead of "Call Diane" say "Call Diane [Surname]".
I must say that you guys are correct. I said the full name, slowly and clearly, and it worked like a charm.

Your method works great until you have a couple hundred contacts.
Plus, since I store all mine [last name], [first name] then anyone with the same last name (family) shows up if I try to type it in. I can scroll, but the more contacts you have, the better the voice dial is.
ETA: Plus, it works when my phone is locked/holstered in my car. Getting my phone out, unlocking it and typing while driving is somewhat of a chore and probably not very safe.
