I am trying to think of a work around for the 8130 Gps issue with Verizon. Does anyone know if the other carriers leave the GPS active? Will installing their software fix this?

    Welcome to Pinstack!

Other carriers that carry the 8130 have the GPS unlocked but installing their software will not make a difference. I have the VZW 8130 and I am running another carriers updated OS and still do not have GPS available.

It is not just this BB, it is every phone/BB that VZW sells. My conversations with VZW reps in the past have all stated that VZW believes that the GPS is a security risk, how I am not sure. But that is their position and there is currently no known way to get around that, if there was you would see it all over the forums.

They're trying to force us into subscribing to VZ Nav at $9.99 a month. For what it's worth, I've found Google Maps to work pretty well with triangulation. I will not pay VZW any more. ~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~

Can I hijack my own thread? Anyway I love to hate VZW. the fact they would call it a threat is rediculous! They activate it for navigator, so I guess it is only a threat to their profits. If any one is working on a hack to the GPS let us know!

from what I have learned the crippling occurs on verizons servers. The gps the phone uses involves information being sent from the cell towers as well as gps sats.
