Thank you so much for calling in the cavalry. I could really use some help here. I know that my boss really has no problem using redirector and mailconnector. So that is not a big deal if we cannot get BIS working. Really the most important thing in my opinion is just getting the attachments to open.

Again I dont know how many times I can thank you guys. =]

Important problem - Attachment Service shows as installed. However does notwork. Has been uninstalled and reinstalled with same problem. Files show that there are attachments, however they are not openable as there is no option for that.

Minor problem - We are using redirector and GaryF explains to me that there are better methods. I have tried setting up BIS, and it appears to not work, so maybe thats why we always used redirector.

I am out of the office now but I will check up on this in the next hour or so. We are getting a heavy snow storm so it might take me some time to arrive home.

I love you guys at pinstack!

Alright...so have we exhausted all avenues for the BIS not working? That would probably the best way to get this to work.

I'm not familiar with the mail redirector so I may not be any help on that end of things.

What error does it give you when trying to open the attachment?

Yea the snow storm isn't fun...roads are bad be careful. I hate shoveling

Re: Verizon 8130 and Email Attachments

Its not that we get an error when trying to open attachments. It is that the email shows there is an attachment (say test2.JPG), but when you go to try to open it, or to the full menu, there are no options relating to opening an attachment of any kind.

As per garyf's instructions, I uninstaled, and reinstalled the attachment service. Still with the same result.

Ok now I am really heading home now. Hopefully the snows not too bad!

Thankfully I have a snowblower so it makes things somewhat quick.

As far as BIS not working. I am not sure why it would not be working. But I do have full control of the firewall, so if there are certain ports that I need to open on the firewall I can do that. As you guys have expressed that BIS is generally the better solution, maybe if/when we figure out the attachment issue we can square the BIS issue away.

As far as the attachments go, like I had mentioned yesterday. The emails display that there is an attachment, however no button or menu will allow us to open said attachment. Yesterday (Tuesday) we removed the Blackberry Attachment Service and reinstalled it via the Application Loader Wizard.

One thing has come to mind since yesterday. I feel bad I did not mention it before. The desktop manager program, when it finishes syncing to the BB, or if you click cancel before it finishes syncing, says 'Intellisync has encountered an error.' You click ok as it is the only option, and things proceed. Could an error like this be caused because I took a backup of his old BB (a 7130) and dumped the backup to the new BB (8130)? Or is it something that can be solved with a simple uninstall and reinstall of desktop software version 4.3? I had originally uninstalled version 4.2, but I did not use any specific methods of uninstall aside from add/remove programs. For reference, the computer is running Vista Home.

Hope this can shed more light on the scenario.

Re: Verizon 8130 and Email Attachments

I thought I read that the BIS and BES servers handle the attachments, meaning the servers actually open the files and render them for the BB to view. I could be wrong on this but if it is not working via redirector that could be accurate.

I just quick looked over on Google and found this:
The attachment service is designed to prevent malicious applications from accessing data on the BlackBerry device by using binary format parsing to open the attachments and prepare them to be sent to the BlackBerry device for rendering. The attachment service neither opens the attachments nor uses any third-party application to render the attachments.
    Source
This to me sounds like the attachment service on the BB does nothing, the server prepares the file and sends the data to the device. Saw another site that said the BB's use UCS (universal content streaming protocol) and attachments are handled by an Attachment Server. Source

Dealing with the attachments issue. Here is the link to the BB Knowledge base article on this matter.
    http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/searc...200%2072130852

Briefly what I think we need to try next is the following. First Check Firewall Settings: Options>Security>Firewall (mine is disabled). Then check for corrupt or missing service books. Post back with questions or if you need help with any of this.
    ______________________________________________
The Desktop [CMIME] service book is corrupt or missing.
    Resolution

Delete the Desktop [CMIME] service book and send a new service book. Complete the following steps:
    1. On the Home screen, click Options.
    2. Click Advanced Options > Service Book.
    3. Click Desktop [CMIME] and select Delete.
    4. When prompted to confirm, click Delete.
    5. To send a new service book, see KB04310.
    Cause 3

If the BlackBerry smartphone is assocated with a BlackBerry Internet Service account, the service book <email address> [CMIME] is corrupt or missing.
    Resolution

Delete the service book, then send the service books for the BlackBerry Internet Service. Complete the following steps:
    1. On the Home screen, click Options.
    2. Click Advanced Options > Service Book.
    3. Click <email address> [CMIME] and select Delete.
    4. When prompted to confirm, click Delete.
    5. Send the service books for the BlackBerry Internet Service. For instructions, see KB02830.
    Cause 4

    The Messages database is corrupt.
    Resolution
Clear the Messages database. (Use Delete Prior from the Menu in your Messages Folder)

Note: If there is corrupt information on the Messages database you will need to discard any backups. Restoring the corrupt data to the BlackBerry smartphone will bring the error back.

Re: Verizon 8130 and Email Attachments

    endfro,

Another work around would be to establish a verizon blackberry account and set your email to automatically forward copies to this address. You can also set up this account to show the work email account as the return address so this would be transparent, but would eliminate the need to run redirector or mail connector (or have a desktop running in order to receive emails on the BB). This may also correct the attachment issue if it is related to the delivery method, as this would actually deliver via normal BIS methods.

If you are interested that new account would be set up on the Verizon BB web page. Let us know if you need more info on this solution...

Setting up a verizon account sounds like it could be an interesting solution. However if something like this will cost us more money I highly doubt the boss-man would be too keen on that. Is something like this service free? I hope so! =D

Re: Verizon 8130 and Email Attachments

No, it is free and easy to do.

Only thing to keep in mind is it is only used on the BB.

I really think this is your best, cleanest solution.

Take a look here form more info on setting up an @ vzw.blackberry.net account.
