    Verizon 8130 and Email Attachments

    Hey all,

Been reading here for a while now that I head up the cell phones along with the IT department at work here. Done as much research on BB's in general as I can so I can stay on top of issues and problems. Staying on top of issues and problems was going GREAT until Friday December 1st! =[

The head honcho here just got a new phone since his older BB had the scroll wheel die out on him. So we got him a 8130 Pearl from Verizon at a great deal.

Anyway.. heres the problem. Before his older BB died on us, since his new computer uses Vista (was purchased without my consent!) BB desktop software v 4.2 never worked with Vista in the way we wanted (Mail Redirector). So we get the new phone, get him all set up, BB desktop software 4.3 installed on the desktop and voila we are getting emails redirected to his new phone. Success? I think not. Now we ARE getting emails which is the more important thing really. But what we are not getting is the ability to open attachments. I have tried sending both word Docs and jpegs, nothing can be opened. However, the BB does see the attachment as being there, it just does no have the option to open the file in the menu. D'oh!

One of the posts I had read recommended going into the Desktop Manager or Device Manager application on the PC, and checking the 'Application Loader' as to what is loaded on the BB. If I recall correctly, we were looking to see a 'Attachment' application with a checked box telling us the app is loaded. But what does The application loader tell me? That the blackberry has no applications loaded!

Please can someone help a guy out here? I would greatly appreciate it.

If you need any more information as to what I am dealing with here, please feel free to ask me.

P.S. I dont know if this matters but. When we got his new phone in, we did a backup via desktop software 4.2 SP1 (or whatever SP was the latest). Then we uninstalled 4.2, installed desktop software version 4.3, and restored data from the backup (old phones backup) to the new phone. This ported over contacts and everything wonderfully. However I fear that this may have caused the above problems mentioned?

You are looking for the Blackberry Attatchment Service in the Application Loader in Desktop Manager.

Well yes that is what I am looking for. I am sorry if I was unclear in my message. But part of the problem is that when I access the 'application loader wizard' it displays that window somewhat as you see it. Only the list of applications is completely empty.

My question is.. is the list empty for a reason? If so where can I acquire this mythical Blackberry Attachment Loader. If the list is empty for no good reason. What can I do to fix the list?

Download and install the BB operating system you are using on your desktop and I beleive that will do it.

Forgive me for being a newbie. But where can I find the OS? And can you tell me how to install the OS onto my PC? Or can you point me towards a guide that does explain it to a newb?

Id hate to just dive into it and go 'Oh hey boss I broke your brand new phone!' =D

    Thanks so much!

    No problem!

Need to know the OS on the phone. Try this: Options:About

Look at the 3rd line down

    v4.X.X.XXX
EDIT - Here is the link to the most updated Verizon OS for the 8130 ( I assume you are using BIS?)

    http://vzw.smithmicro.com/blackberry...px?ct=personal

BTW - why are you using redirector?

Re: Verizon 8130 and Email Attachments

Thanks. I did not notice your edit.

We are using redirector just because that is what has always worked? I am new to the whole blackberry world so I dont know a ton about it. All I know is that before vista, my boss used to use redirector to redirect emails from his outlook over to his blackberry.

Is there a better solution to getting his emails over to him? I know we could be using Blackberry Exchange Server, but as far as I know the main reason we are not using that is a price issue. It just doesnt seem to make sense finance wise to spend all the money on a BES when we have one person with a blackberry.

However, as I am new to the world of BB's and you are not. I am sure that you know something that I do not. So if there is a system I can be using for my boss to get his emails to his BB when he is out of office I am always more than happy to try something new. Especially if it is better than the current solution.

I guess what I am saying is, we here at my office tend to employ 'if its not broken dont fix it'. Although I hope there is a better solution to the BB Redirector. (One of the guys here has a Palm Treo 700wx that syncs beautifully with our exchange server.)

Again, many many thanks. I am off to go try out installing this software! Wish me luck!

Lets get your attachments working and then we can look at it. I am thinking you can set up his 8130 to just use Blackberry Internet Service (BIS) directly.

Re: Verizon 8130 and Email Attachments

    GaryF,

I think we are getting there. I just returned from installing the file you had me download onto the computer. Now when I connect the phone, and go into the Application Loader Wizard, I do see that the Blackberry Attachment application is indeed checked. When I go into (on the phone) Options - Advanced -Applications (or whatever it isim doing this from memory now) I can see that listed on the phone is the blackberry attachment, so it appears to 'be there'. However I just attached a .jpg image to an email, sent it to him. The phone sees that there is an attachment, but it still does not give me the option to open said attachment.

    Am I doing something wrong?

    Thanks!

    endfro....

Before we do anything else please remove the battery with the phone on...leave it out for 60 seconds, and reinstall it. Then send a NEW EMAIL with an attatchment and post the results....

Re: Verizon 8130 and Email Attachments

    GaryF,

Back in the office now. As soon as the boss comes in today I will remove the battery while the phone is on for 60 seconds, and reinstall the battery. Then I will try to send another attachment. Am I fine sending a JPG? Or is there a different preferred file type to test?

    Harry,

I have read about service books before. Where might I find Verizon's BIS login page? =D

    Good Morning!

You might try a different file than the last one just to make sure thats not the issue...

I will post back the link to Verizons BIS page.
