USB issues with Vista and Dell 551

Pearl works fine with older Dell desktop with X/P. New Dell 551 with Vista Home Premium does not. Connect to Desk Manager and it does not find the Pearl and I get message on Pearl that power is not sufficient to charge. Windows does find the pearl. Have 4.2 latest versions. carrier is ATT. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks

Is the USB port you are using a 2.0? Go to your device manager and check the settings for all your USB ports and set the prefernces to have the power on all the time. This will be sure that the laptop is not powering them down or reducing power performance to enhance battery life.

In device manager right click each usb root hub under universal serial bus controllers, choose properties and then choose Power Management tab, make sure to uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".

    Pearl is fine.
    Vista is not.

So drop Vista and put XP Pro on Dell 551 and everything will be OK.
Oh, and that is assuming you have administrator privileges...

Yes we all know Vista is a pretty poor product.

Although it should still work with your BB. I know there are many stackers using Vista with their BBs.

Not sure exactly, maybe you're missing drivers? Or just plug and unplug it a few times quickly it worked for me when my XP box wouldn't recognize my BB. Also try a battery pull, sometimes the BB gets totally confused also.

I am not turning this into another one of those this vs that threads, but I use Vista on two PC's, one an HP tower and the other is a Dell laptop. My BB plug-n-plays fine on both as well as my work laptop which is also a Dell running XP. I don't think it is the OS, seeing how he states the USB will not charge properly. I would look at drivers as reddog states or the laptop itself.

I agree. We'll not flame OS's on computers.
And I agree, it's driver matter. Normally reinstalling DM solves issue of charging BB trough USB.
I also have same problem charging Pearl under Vista on dual boot XP/Vista machine. That problem is not present when I boot into XP. However, I do not have DM installed under Vista.

Knowing Dell (I support about 500 Dell Optiplex / Latitude users ) I somehow don't believe there is anything worse than USB 2.0 on Dell (Precision?) 551.

You can also try downloading desktop manager 4.3 I don't have the link since I'm mobile but it works just fine for my BlackBerry on my gateway vista laptop.

    ~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~

Thanks to all for their suggestions. Tried the power settings and they were all normal so not that. Had the latest desktop software for 4.2, including the two service packs, and still ng. ATT did not have 4.3 loaded. Any other suggestions other than loading XP?

Uninstalled Roxio media mgr from dell, reboot, then downloaded 4.3. Worked like a charm, no error messages and loaded 1gig of songs on my brand new, larger 2 gig micro card. Thanks to all, very happy camper.
