Upgrading to a new Pearl - Concerns

    Hi All,
I think I am going to finally take the plunge into the future and upgrade from a 7290 to a Pearl. I did have a few questions about the Pearl though:

    1. I do a lot of communication over IRC and the like. Does SureType function with a generic J2ME device or will I have to MultiTap?

    2. I'm used to the 7290 screen aspect. It seems the Pearl has a shorter width and longer height screen. Will generic J2ME apps along with others scale to this screen? I figure if an app will work on the 7290 just fine, it will on the Pearl, but I'd just like to make sure.

    3. I have heard that the Pearl cannot ring and vibrate at the same time. Is this true? If so, is there some kind of hack to enable this functionality?

    4. How easy would it be to move my contacts/emails/etc over to the new device from the 7290? Just connect it to the desktop and run the migration manager?

    5. Where would be the best place to get a Pearl? I don't mind a used one as long as it is in good condition -- so I was thinking of trying the Buy/Sell/Trade forum and perhaps checking eBay. My wireless provider (CellOne) offered me one for $399.99, but I have a feeling they can be had for less.

I will be using this for both business and personal use. I did consider the Curve, but I'd like something more compact. In doing so, I sacrifice the full keyboard, which I have some concerns with. Some people swear by SureType and say they can type faster than QWERTY, and some would die before you could take their QWERTY away. So far, it sounds like a mixed bag. I am pretty technology savvy so I think I'll eventually adapt to the SureType.

Any other ideas/comments you would like to add, I welcome them.
    Thanks!
    Elliot

Re: Upgrading to a new Pearl - Concerns

Posting a new thread with my edit changes, as when I was submitting the edit, it wasn't going through.

EDIT: 6. I wear the 7290 holster when I am at work, that way I can automatically slide it in the holster to lock it, and it stays at my side for easy access (7290 is awkward in a pocket). Is there something like this for the pearl that I can attach to my belt and have it auto-lock when placed in the holster?

    7. Being a Pearl owner opens me up to a lot more options when it comes to applications. Are there any specific ones that you'd recommend for a new Pearl owner?

    1. I can't be certain, but I'm pretty sure SureType is run by the OS, not the application, so you should be alright... but again, don't take my word for it.

    2. All J2ME apps work fine on the Pearl... I've used plenty of them.

    3. Maybe I've never noticed before, but I have my Pearl set to Vibrate+Tone, so it should be able to do both at the same time... it could be that I'm not paying attention, and the vibration and tones are alternating, but I think they go at the same time. In any case, it will do both when your phones rings, just maybe not simultaneously.

    4. You should have no problem... just plug your Pearl into your computer and it should sync all your info from the old fine just fine.

    5. DO NOT PAY $399!!! I got mine for $100 from Cingular, but if you're with another carrier, look on eBay for an UNLOCKED phone.

    6. There are holsters that work the same with... they have a mgent in them so when the Pearl is inserted, it makes volume higher, screen locks, etc... all depends on your settings.

    7. Berry 411 is AWESOME. ColorPearl, Texas HoldEm King II, and GMail (if you use GMail, of course) are also good ones.

SureType works great for me. I don't know if its FASTER that QWERTY, but I love it. As far as compact keyboards go, its the best there is!

The pearl is a fantastic all in one device. i had a 7290, then a 7105 and now a pearl. The migration to the pearl is going to be easy for you.

    1. I do a lot of communication over IRC and the like. Does SureType function with a generic J2ME device or will I have to MultiTap? The SureType will work nicely. You can add custom words, but with the new OS .96 or .101 it recognizes a lot of the chat lingo and is easy to use. You will not have to rely on multitap.

    2. I'm used to the 7290 screen aspect. It seems the Pearl has a shorter width and longer height screen. Will generic J2ME apps along with others scale to this screen? I figure if an app will work on the 7290 just fine, it will on the Pearl, but I'd just like to make sure. The pearl screen is 240x260, and is far superior to the 7290. It is brighter, easier to read and the trackball is much faster(IMO) than the wheel. Some apps may not be compatible from the 7290 to the 8100, but there may be an 8100 version available.

I have heard that the Pearl cannot ring and vibrate at the same time. Is this true? If so, is there some kind of hack to enable this functionality? No hack that I know of and it vibrates, then rings. Doesn't all happen at once.

    4. How easy would it be to move my contacts/emails/etc over to the new device from the 7290? Just connect it to the desktop and run the migration manager? This is the easiest part of the switch. Destop Manager will carry everything over for you. Just back up the 7290 and it will restore on your pearl.

I think this forum is a good place to start. eBay is subjective, but you can find great deals a lot of the time. You should be able to get a pearl for under $400 I think.

    6. I wear the 7290 holster when I am at work, that way I can automatically slide it in the holster to lock it, and it stays at my side for easy access (7290 is awkward in a pocket). Is there something like this for the pearl that I can attach to my belt and have it auto-lock when placed in the holster? The pearl does not come with a holster, but does have cases available that have the holstering features of your 7290.

    7. Being a Pearl owner opens me up to a lot more options when it comes to applications. Are there any specific ones that you'd recommend for a new Pearl owner? There are a lot of choices. I like the new Dollar5 Media Player. The camera is nice and you can use it as an MP3 player. Mine is an all in one device. No separate audio player or camera for me right now.

    Hi Elliot,

Not a big java guy but I will try to help with a few of your questions...

True, the pearl in the vibrate+Ring mode does just that - first it vibrates and then ite rings. Lots of folks have complained but I have yet to see a hack or solution, other than extending the ring time to 30 seconds before voice mail.

Desktop Manager has an application built in to move your info over. If you are using Outlook when you sync the first time it will have the same basic result. You should find it quite painless.

There is a holster that will take a little getting used to (has a flap cover) but it does provide for the auto lock as well as the "in holster" "out of holster" profile settings.

There are a couple of threads with opinions about "must have" applications...some for fun, some for function. Pinstack Launcher, Opera Mini Browser, Jive Talk, Beyond 411, ColorPearl, come to mind as some of the most popular. There is a download section of the forums you will want to browse...
