Sorry - I just saw this thread. I have traveled internationally for years -- Here is the skinny:
TMO offers international BB service for $20 / month. That will cover unlimited GPRS data. You can add and delete that service any time (like right before you leave and right after you return). However this will leave you with very expensive per minute costs ($2.99 /min in PI). You will need to turn on the International Service (free) if you plan to make calls.
Yes, with an unlocked phone you should have no problem using a local SIM card but will not get data or BB services.

If you want it all - One option is to buy a cheap unlocked GSM phone and use a local sim card -- as you see the local calls are very cheap in that area. Tiger Direct or ebay has unlocked GSM phones available. Just make sure you get a band that is used in PI.

Hope this helps. Feel free to let me know if you have any more questions. Have fun!

I did a TON of research into T-Mo's International BB Package and it's a little dubious as to whether it will cover all GPRS data or just RIM-pushed emails. Apparently, MOST customers (according to HoFo and Googling) have been able to web-surf, and use GPRS-enabled apps and not incur GPRS roaming costs, but some have seen GPRS roaming charges even with the International Email plan.

Keep in mind that the plan specifically mentions email only and there's really no way to tell how T-Mo is differentiating between email use or GPRS. It makes me nervous in that straight GPRS data doesn't necessarily go through the RIM servers/BIS/BES whereas email does, so theoretically it's easy for T-Mo to see what's been email traffic and what hasn't.

Of course, T-Mo specifically states that any GPRS usage outside of email will be billed at .01/K when I asked them.

Anyone have any experience with this?

    Thanks,

    N.

Kid - thanks for the info - Good Advice!

And I do recall having a disucssion about the data usage with TMO and they seemed a bit confused about even attatchments... I was all over Europe in January and had no email issues (or extra charges) but I dont think I tried any surfing.

Please note that with many carriers, getting your PEarl unlocked not only is NOT expensive, but it's FREE! For instance, I called T-mobile and asked them for an unlock code. They sent it by e-mail 2 days later. Worked like a charm. Try calling your carrier and telling htem you're going abroad and asking them for the unlock code. Doesn't hurt to ask!

Also, T-Mo's foreign access plan is the same price as their domestic one ($20/month). SO they switched me over to the foreign plan for the days I'll be abroad. SHould be the same total charge, as the regular plan will be deactivated when I leave and reactivated when I come back.
