    Question Trackball lights up 'sometimes'??

I seem to be having an extremely bad year when it comes down to cells.....

A little background, I started with an SKII, (lost it:cry: ), went MDA (dropped and broke my first, got extremely fustrated with the second one), went Samsung T609 (OMG me a flip phone?), and finally my Pearl (second one I should say).

My first Pearl lasted 2 weeks, and on the eve of my "grace period" with Tmobile running out, my Pearl refused to boot. It just stayed at an error screen, no matter what was done to it. Luckily I was able to exchange it for a new one, and it's been 2 weeks since that (no more grace period) and while I'll say it's still working.....my trackball doesn't light up everytime I press a button. Like it's screen is off, and I press any button to get to my home screen, and the trackball will light up on some occassions and it wont on others. It just started doing that yesterday.

So this is my question: Has anyone else experienced this? Any advice as to should I deal with equipment protection (Tmobile) or should I just stay with it. I don't mind the track ball issue too much but Im scared that other problems are just gonna emerge.

I think that RIM was in a rush to get this out into the market, to see our reactions, which I don't mind (I love my Pearl ), but if I paid so much for it, I would like it to work for longer than 2 weeks.

Sorry for the long windedness. Any advice, suggestions welcome. Thanks.

Did you by chance load a new OS on the device? If you're still on the tmo original OS, go to options>screen/keyboard, and turn off the automatic backlight feature...

Thanks for the reply, 17oobie, I am still on the original OS from tmo I just went to my screen/keyboard option and shut off the auto bl feature, but unfortunately, the track ball still wont light up when I wake the bb up. I don't know if it's just a cosmetic issue, or something more serious....

HAH! I tried that. When I got my new phone, I asked the rep who helped me if I got another grace period, I was told no. but even if, it's been an entire 2 weeks since my last change. I might have to deal with equipment protection, but then I would have to pay. (I had to pay an extra $110 bux for my 2nd MDA)

Hmm, that didn't work? Try removing the battery?

you know, i really think you'll be able to exchange it if there's an issue. ask to speak to a blackberry specialist and go through the issues with them. if they decide there is something wrong with the device, they'll probably swap it. especially if this is the second unit you've had trouble with, which you should also let them know...

Did you save that screen setting? It sounds like what happened to me when I had that option on...

The trackball isn't going to light up if the keyboard doesn't light up.

    Try this...

Wake it up (meaning bring it out of standby) in a dark room, and it will light up along with the keyboard.

If you are in a bright room and it doesn't light up, along with the keyboard, hold your hand over the top of the device up by the LED light and it will light up.

It's kind of like on the 8700 also.

If its bright and the autodim isn't on, then they keyboard is not going to light up. If its dark and the auto dim is on, then the keyboard will light up.

Pretty much its to conserve battery life and it's more there to help you when using your phone in the dark. I guess they are assuming it doesn't do much good to light the keyboard and trackball up when it's bright and you can see it anyways.

    Re: Trackball lights up 'sometimes'??

I might have to get on the phone with tmo (they prob have my number on block already ).....I also noticed that when I 'wake up' my pearl where there is light, the trackball doesn't light up, but when I 'wake' it in limited light, the trackball lights. I did turn off the auto back light feature, and turned off the device, and removed the battery. Im wondering if it's another option that's meant to save battery power. But I haven't messed with any options in a while.

ok that'll explain it, I understand the battery saving feature, but I don't get how it (trackball) was lighting up where there was light, and then all of a sudden it refuses to light up. Im not really minding it, I just don't want it to be a more serious issue behind it....

thanks for everyone's responses! I appreciate the support.

AutoDim is meant for the screen itself getting brighter and darker depending on the lighting situations, however I don't believe that auto-dim has anything to do with the keyboard lighting up when its activated or not. It sounds strange, and you would think that since they are pretty much running for the same purpose that they would be integrated with each other, however I don't think that is the case. While they are both basically the same, they aren't, does that make any sense?

Like on the old 72 series...The only way to get the keypads to light up and the screen to light up was to actually press the light button. They realized how annoying that was having to do that whenever you wanted to light it up.

    NP.

BTW, how's NYC? I was actually offered a chance to transfer there, but the next morning I woke up and it was 32 degrees here, and then I quickly remembered how much I HATED the winters in Chicago and up north so decided to stay put.
