don't use color your trackball if you don't want to pay for the app....also the app is only good for 2 or 3 phones then you have to rebuy it...use color pearl from http://www.geekandproud.net it's a free app and works great

colorpearl works great on the 8100 but when the screen is on and i have the color set to blue its a really faded blue, can barely tell what it is, but when i hold the standby button and the screen turns off it turns to a really deep blue for a brief moment before turning off. anyone know why it does that?

it does this for all colors...

Because of the orginal white LED...it fades the other colors out. The only time it will be bright is when it's bright out. Meaning that the keyboard LEDs won't kick in because they don't need light up the keyboard when it's daylight.

The light sensor is in near the status LED. Stick a light near that and the backlight for the keyboard should turn off.
