I don't have a Blackberry yet and the 8100 is one of my finalists. I'd be interested to hear from everyone on this...

The Pearl can (BLANK) and no other Blackberry can.

Fill in the blank. I've picked up a couple of things from what I've read but what can the users add? What am I missing?

    1) take pictures
    2) play music
    3) play video
    4) voice dial
    5) save to a SD card

The Blackberry Pearl is the only Blackberry to share its name with a feminine hygeine product... Tampax Pearl Tampons... Thank my girlfriend for that lil piece of info.

On TMO-networks it can be used with MY FAVES which allows you to pick 5 phone numbers and use them using the mobile to mobile feature!

    it can break more easily

it can take worse photos than my 5mpixel tiny sony camera that was really cheap on ebay

it can sound not half as good as my ipod

sorry I still think that the 8700 rocks and something that does everything ok will not do one thing really well.

Ah, but jamesgraylx, the 8100 does do one thing really well. What it does best of any BlackBerry is be small. For those of us who feel high tech should be inconspicuous to the point of near-invisibility, small is a significant advantage. If I know I'll want to take pictures, I'll bring my digital camera. But I don't want to carry it around "just in case". Ditto my mp3 player. Multi-function units like the 8100 serve a very useful purpose as stop-gap tools. No, they aren't the best at everything, but you can carry them and not look like Batman with all the crap hanging from your belt. I haven't gotten an 8100 yet, I'm waiting for the bugs to get worked out (and I want to see Cingular's version). But I will get one. No doubt.

I would hope your 5MP Sony camera takes better pictures as I would hope your Ipod sounds better. My pockets will be empty while you lug around three devices to get the job done

Well according to N8, the blackberry pearl can freeze and cause you to want to throw it out of the window or against the wall.

The Pearl can make you want to give up BB altogether and no other Blackberry can.

Re: The Pearl can (BLANK) and no other BB can.

I came from a treo 650, so I'm sure I have some frustration ahead of me (I had to return my first one - dust under screen, loose parts, other odd probs....) but the form factor really has me wowed after carrying a treo 600 and 650 around for a year and a half.........plus, I did everything I could to avoid using my treo's touchscreen (and keeping it from getting scratched!) nice to have a bit more of "rugged" phone. And one not the size of a brick

Re: The Pearl can (BLANK) and no other BB can.

    The 8100 can:

Do what a BB is supposed to do, conduct business through e-mail.

Can now do what many other "PDA" devices do.

Can take decent pictures considering the BB is primarily a phone and PDA.

Can play movies, despite its small form factor [size] and considering the BB is primarily a phone and PDA.

Can play music, despite its small form factor and considering the BB is primarily a phone and PDA.

Can store files on removable storage media [microSD]

Can turn people green with envy when they see it in your hand.

Can eliminate the need to lug a camera and MP3 player everywhere one travels [especially where I live, in San Francisco. There are always photo opportunities, so I had to always lug around my 5MP camera].

Can cause expected frustration for all of us "have to have it first" types as we perform beta testing for RIM.

it's not a perfect device but it's a step in the right direction for RIM. Two years from now this will all be expected and will probably work well by then. I honestly don't have one complaint about it. I am really not using it for much other than BES service and a phone. I use the camera to document wiring configurations at work but not much else. I haven't used the music feature very much because they didn't ship headphones with it. L

Sorry, rrsarge, but I gotta disagree with you. I have a 7100i right now and look forward to getting an 8100. If I were to come home tomorrow to a letter from Nextel telling me that they would be replacing my 7100i with an 8700 because RIM would only be supporting full-keyboard models in the future, I'd have to give up BB's. They're all much bigger than I'd even consider.
