Talk me out of a 7130 and into a Pearl......

I'm going to be a first time BB user and torn between the two models. The only differences that really stick out is the camera, voice dialing and size. The down side to me is the cramped keys on the Pearl, but the look is so, so sexy.

What am I missing??? Is the Pearl really that much better, and if so why? If you look at the 71xx threads, almost every one is about a problem and you can't find any posts raving about owning one. Every other post here touts the ecstasy that everyone has for the Pearl. Hmmmmmmmmmm.

Help me out here please. Give me some more reason to spend an extra $100.

In my thoughts. to each his own, it all depends on what your main use is.
I love my pearl because of the media player. hate having a camera, yes I said it!
Personally, I would like to strangle the guy who said "hey, everyone who has a phone NEEDS to carry a camera"
    Others love having a camera.
if your main use is personal the pearl is great!
I have never used a 7130 so I can't say good or bad.
    just my .02
But either way you have a BB and a great support team here on the stacks!!
Been a long while since last login. Sorry all, adjusting to a new life is great and hell at the same time!!

Re: Talk me out of a 7130 and into a Pearl......

Well first off let me start by saying how much I love my pearl and that between the two models I would choose the pearl. 10 reasons why the pearl is so amazing:
    1. It has a camera which is actually very good for a cell phone and is great for taking business and personal pictures.
    2. The optional slot for a microSD card helps out a lot if you want to have a bunch of music on your phone.
    3. Video enabled let's you put almost video you want on your phone.
    4. Since the phone is new you get all the new features that RIM has come out with and let's you be on top of your productivity.
    5. The push email is great so that's always a plus.
    6. Battery life is pretty good for me considering I use my pearl constantly all day everyday and it never dies on me because of low battery during the day.
    7. You are able to download many different apps on the pearl and the variety is amazing.
    8. The trackball is awesome and so easy to use. It is so much better than a trackwheel in my opinion.
    9. Although it has a suretype keypad that doesn't stop you from typing amazingly fast and accurate.
    10. The final reason is because the phone is sooo popular it means that the developers are always looking for new things to add to it unlike many other devices.
There are many more reasons why the pearl is Better but for now those are my top 10 reasons. If anyone else has anything to add to this please do so.

Hope this makes you get the pearl because if you don't then you'll regret it.

I dont know about the other phone, but the the first time I saw the
Pearl I knew I would buy it. The other BB's I ever saw were clunky
ugly things, too utilitarian for me, but the Pearl looked as nice as a
Razor and did a lot more stuff. The Tmo version is a work of art
and I would not buy the Cingi because they mutilated it, but if coverage
on tmo stinks in your area, well do what you need to.

Also the BB branded accessary's are junk so dont buy them, the Tmo
    case fits this phone great.

Lastly the best reason to buy it is the Narrator Software which reads the
emails to you as they come in, and this alone will definately crackberry you.

Having had both, I would say go for the Pearl:

    Pros: Lighter, camera, music player

Cons: Smaller screen and smaller keyboard

Tried the pearl and I would go for a 8700 before a 8100 and I hate those waffle size keyboard...
Personnally there's no use of having a device more laggy than mine just for a camera and a mp3 player which I already have.
If you really like a 1.3 MPx camera and a mp3 player the pearl is for you.
If you want a business device used for work email and phone the 7130 is for you....

    Next decision is yours
I'm french canadian so I can also help you in french, just PM me
UNLESS it is for a BETA OS, it's at your own risk and I won't support it

This (pearl) is the first BlackBerry I’ve owned. I LOVE IT!!! I chose this because I did not like the looks of the other blackberrys, I did not want to look like I was carrying around a 5 lb PDA, most were UGLY. Most cell phones you trade off looks for functionality, but the pearl has functionality AND the looks.
Personally I would scour the web and look at how both stack up, I personally like CNET, and look at the critic’s reviews and user reviews for each phone. Then based on what you find chose the one that best fits your needs.

Let us know which one you go with.

Re: Talk me out of a 7130 and into a Pearl......

when i first started looking i was torn between the Blackjack and the Q, however when i had to stick with cingular for a family plan we had i was narrowed down to the blackjack and i was SURE i wanted it, i went in to get it and was shown the pearl by the dealer and at first glance i was already sold on the pearl, but thinking it was an old school blackberry device, not capable of features of WM5 i was initially thrown off from getting too attached.

I went home, looked it up, and was sold, my most favored feature still is the 2.5m headphone jack, i just cant live without it, using BT headphones is not an option for me, just for having to have no ability to use BT in hospitals or in airplanes was enough for me to search for a headset jack.

my problem was i wanted an all in one device, because i'm too lazy to carry 4 devices in my pocket at any given time i'll never use them, but i always carry a phone, so shoving everything into a phone for me has been exactly what i wanted, and i've used every feature of this phone since i got my data plan activated. LOVE MY PEARL!

Re: Talk me out of a 7130 and into a Pearl......

Well, it looks like I will be getting a Pearl as the company I work for could not even get a quote on a 7130 as both Cingular and T-mobile said that it was being discontinued! My company has 5200 employees and has worked out deals with Cingular, T-Mobile, Sprint & Verizon for rates and equipment.

It's not all bad as my company is picking up all of the cost except $50 so even if I don't end up liking it, I can dump it on e-bay and buy a 7130 and be a few bucks ahead.

I'm looking forward to learning a lot here and thanks for all of the responses and positive remarks. It could be worse..............they could make me get a Treo!

Re: Talk me out of a 7130 and into a Pearl......

7130 is a great device, but the time has passed. No expansion, bulkier, subjectively less sharp screen, side-wheel navigation.... and lower resale value.

Once you get used to the trackball, being able to navigate up/down AND left/right, you will soon forget the wheel navigation and why you liked it in the first place. The keys are not that different in size (I own both too).

Spend the extra 100 bucks, the resale value will be at least $100 more for the Pearl than the 71xx series.

good luck with your choice... go pearl.

Luckily I won't have to spend the extra $100. It's costing me a total of $50 as the company is picking up the rest! Hope to have it some time next week.
