So yes, I'm new to the whole BlackBerry thing and if you remember ... BlackBerry Pearl forum
Remember when you made the switch from conventional cell phone to BB? ARG!
So yes, I'm new to the whole BlackBerry thing and if you remember when you made the move from conventional cell phone to BlackBerry and how frustrating it was...that's me...
Just wanna vent for a minute. Keeping in mind that I have no professional reasons for recently purchasing my BB Pearl, I have the following issues - and forgive me if I seem like a complete BB Idiot...I am...I know I am...I've embraced it. Feel free to read this just for amusement purposes - but if you have any helpful hints for me...great...
Thanks for reading...again...I have no idea about the ettiquette of these forums, so if I'm breaking some unspoken rule by posting and venting - just let me know and I'll stop.
- why the heck can I go to Verizon online and download a stinkin' ringBACK tone and have been told that they don't support ringtones? grrrr... seems like the reverse should be the case...
- why doesn't any 3rd party have a decent Michael Buble ringtone? I love that guy and if you don't put the best part of the stinkin' song in the ringtone - your efforts in creating it - IHO - are pointless.
- geek squad. if I wanna have someone come to my house and get this thing rockin' and rollin' is there such a thing?
- if one more person tells me to read my user's manual I'm gonna scream. The thing is - the user's manual doesn't say anything about how to download a ringtone - if I am mistaken, please give me the page #.
- i wonder how aerodynamic these BBPearls are...has anyone else out there clocked how fast these things can fly through the air? Perhaps one of you wants to come to Tacoma, WA and take a little video using YOUR BB Pearl - since I have no idea how to use mine.
Happy replying! Love, Shoobop!

LMAO.. love it!!
I jumped onto the BlackBerry bandwagon in November... like you, just because I wanted to. I haven't looked back!! In fact, my hubby thinks I'm having an affair with my phone! LOL This forum is an incredible source of information.. if you can't find the answer to a question by using the search feature simply post a thread and you'll have an answer. As for the ringtones... I have a Bold and I just add the ringtone files to my sd card. I won't go into any more detail because I don't know how similar/different these devices are.
Congrats on the new BlackBerry and welcome to Pinstack!
I got my first berry, a 8100 with just the USB cable and charger. Just used the phone and learned as you go on it.
Device history: 8100 > 8320 > 8900 & 9530. Keep crackin'
Learning about blackberry from scratch is just another beautiful part of the experience. I remember my cellphone was a little lg slider back in 06 before I bought a 7103e. That started the beginning of a beautiful relationship.

Let's answer your questions first
1. Don't waste time with the carrier, they probably charge for a Ring Tone
2. Go find the song you want in MP3 format, use an MP3 Editor and cut out the 30 second chorus from the MP3. Install the Desktop Manager on your PC, plug your Pearl into the PC via the USB port. Enable Mass Storage Mode and copy the 30 second clip over to your Pearl (get a memory card if you don't already have one, highly recommended 1 Gig cards are a few dollars). Disconnect your phone from the computer. Hit Menu, Media Player, find your MP3 and set as Ring Tone
3. Call Best Buy
4. There is a manual?
5. The Pearl is a good entry BlackBerry, not so much as a device for hurling at people. Eventually you will graduate to a full keyboard, and there will be no looking back.
Now my story.
I am fairly new to BlackBerries too. A friend of mine send me a Curve in December 2007. At the time, I had a Nokia N73 and have been using Nokias for the last 10 years. I had no intention of switching as I found the BlackBerries to be big and ugly. Also the thought of paying for data didn't appeal to me. So I left the phone in the box.
My friend was persistant and kept pestering me every month to try the phone. Eventually on April 1 (April Fools Day) I relented and gave in.
Back in 2003, I tried a Sony Ericsson T610 and I hated the learning curve, it took me weeks to get use to the menus as it was backwards compared to the Nokias. So I thought it was going to be a challenge to learn how to use a BlackBerry.
I called my carrier and got the basic $15 unlimited email data plan. I inserted my SIM and turned on the Curve.
I was amazed at how intutive the interface was. It took me two hours to get use to everything and I have not put the phone down since.
I purcahsed an iPhone on July 1st when it was released and two hours later, I came running back to my Curve, begging for forgiveness. In September, I retired my Curve when the Bold was released. I am a true convert. This is definitely the best device for me. It is not for everyone, but for my life style, nothing compares or comes close.
I am kicking myself for not trying this sooner. Imagine all the time I could have saved with having such a wonderful tool. I should have done this years ago. I feel bad for having the Curve sit there for 4 months.
Give it some time, it will change your life. The fact that this site and other sites similar to this exists is a testiment to the BlackBerry addiction.
I now have a huge data plan to appease my addiction.

Well Folks, thanks for embracing me. The first post I made here yesterday - after the Verizon operator told me to come here to register - basically called me a cotton-headed ninny-muggins (yes..I love Will Ferrell in ELF) and said that the "onus is on me" to go through that meaningless BlackBerry 101 tutorial. PFFFT.
Whatever man...I want instant gratification - and since there are so many here that LOVE bestowing their BB knowledge, allbeit a bit BRAGGY to those of us who have no idea what the heck the stupid "menu" button is...oh yeah...I know - refer to my BlackBerry 101 Tutorial. LMAO! Oh man...I crack myself up!
You may all be extremely happy to know that I have successfully converted one of my Michael Buble CD's to MP3 and have finally carved out a snipit for my cell phone ringtone...I'm actually a bit giddy at the moment and haven't even downloaded the stupid thing yet. I went to tuiconverter.com and even for someone who has a hard time finding the right setting on my hair dryer, I figured it out! TYVM!!!
Now I gotta get to know some of you so that I can venture into the BBMessenger or whatever you call it. I have no idea how THAT works...none of my friends have blackberry's...this is gonna be fun! My husband is going to wonder what happened to his wife!
I love my new pinstack family. I look forward to corresponding to all of you soon!
Mucho Love from Tacoma, WA - yes..where the pacific northwest is waiting for Noah to arrive ANY MINUTE!
I am sure you have figured out that the menu button is the key with the BlackBerry Logo.
Search the social scene here and get a few PINs. Once you have a few, you can get started on BlackBerry Messenger.
Think of it as ICQ since all BlackBerries have a unique number. The best part, it is free and you can talk to any other BlackBerry from any carrier any where in the world.
Yeah..that BlackBerry 101 Tutorial helped me figure out the menu botton.
Now - if I could only get the ringtone I created and saved to my computer.
If you're getting sick of my stupidity..you might as well stop reading now! ) I plan to ask questions until either I have EVERYTHING figured out ~OR~ everyone stops answering my threads.
Sooo...having said that - I have the stupid cable plugged into my stupid BlackBerry and the stupid thing isn't being recognized by my previously mentioned STUPID COMPUTER!!!!!!!!!!!
You are about to witness a 37 year old woman lose her MIND!
Is it so much to ask to have the incredible Michael Buble set as my ringtone? FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!
Justs remember - I'm new here and I'm trying very hard to keep it all together.
Still love ya,
Once the Desktop Manager is open, go to Application Loader, and put in your device password if you have one set up. Let it run until it gets to a screen that shows you what you have loaded on your BB. Hit the Browse key. Locate the ringtone. Highlight it and then choose next. Wait for the screen to show you if it has been loaded. Click Finish. Wait for that process to finish. Once your phone is back on the homescreen, go to Media>Ringtones>My Ring Tones and then see if it's listed there. If yes, click the menu key and select "Set as Ring Tone."
that number to Geek Squad?
HEY! Quit rolling your eyes...I have given enough disclaimers to you people that you should know that I have no idea what I'm doing over here.
I think I'll give you all a break and go to bed now. We'll pick this up tomorrow. I'm much farther tonight than I was yesterday - thanks to the few that have responded here.
Ge - thanks for sharing your story.
Erika - thanks for your precise directions on downloading that ringtone - and I promise - the second I figure out what a Desktop Manager is, I'll be ALL OVER IT!
All the others - thanks for the encouragement...please keep on the lookout for my SOS calls. I need you!
Have a great weekend!
Shoobop, welcome to what you will soon be calling your "Crackberry".
When I picked up a par of 7100's from ATT 4 years ago, it was becuase they were free. I had no clue how to do anything exept make voice calls, and I screwed up the first two of those. Now I can make my 8310 curve do anything, (it still won't bring me a beer when I get home fro work, but a quick BBM to the wife will net me a "Get it yourself, and bring me one too!")
We aren't offended by your noobieness, that's why we hang around here. We were noobs once too. ~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~
You're welcome. Desktop Manager is the software that came on the CD with your BB that allows you to load applications, themes, wallpapers, ringtones, onto your BB.

If you have followed Ge's suggestion and added & formated a micro sd card, all you need to do is connect to your desktop, answer Yes when prompted to enable Mass Storage Mode, and your BB will look like a removable drive. All you need to do then is copy from your PC right to your device.
Without that, as Erica has posted you will need Desktop Manager WITH Roxio Media Manager (download version 4.6 here)
This will allow you to explore and copy to your device memory (using the Media Manager application). Once running, you should find that pretty self explanatory.
Now, I KNOW you are anxious to get Michael playing your song, and don't want to wait for a long download or a trip to Best Buy, so I am going to give you a quick workaround to get that ringtone installed....
I assume you have a data plan and an email account on your Blackberry? If so, simply attach the ringtone file you created to an email and send it to yourself. When you get the email, open it and highlight the attachment in the header and hit Menu. Scroll down to Download Attachment. From here, you should be able to save it to your ringtones folder
Oh yeah - here is another little trick...would you like your own, instant delivery,"Shoobop@verizon.blackberry.net" address? From your BB Home screen, select Setup Internet Email. Once in the application, you should see an option to "Create a BlackBerry email address" These can come in handy since they are instant delivery and not subject to any delays (you may have noticed that most email accoutns are subject to up to a 15 minute delay on deliveries, thats how ofter the BB Server looks for new emails on your server). This would be a great way to get that ringtone on your BB ever faster!
Hope this helps, and Welcome to the family!
Have I mentioned how much I love all of you...
Now, I know newbies are a pain in the heiney, but you have all been really patient with me thus far and yes..the onus is on me to try to implement what you all share with me. And trust me when I say that I like to learn by doing and watching. So I'm gonna give it another shot tonight and I can't wait!
adperdue and Gary...thanks so much.
I can't wait to try to email my SWEET ringtone to my email and try to follow Gary's instructions! All this fuss for a ringtone...seems kinda silly - but you'd be surprised at how worked up I got! WOW! I needed a vallium last night when I got off the computer!
Forever in your debt,
Well my new friends, I finally have my ringtone downloaded and you'll never guess what else! It WORKS!!!
I almost shed a tear. I took Gary's advice only because it made the most sense to me at this point in my blackberry learning curve. So thanks Gary. I am forever in your debt! Onto bigger and better issues now! Lol
Love, Shoobop ~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~
