    Red stars, indicating unread mail.

A couple of questions, I need to know on behalf of a friend in need.

O.k, if I have new mail, I know that I get notified with a little red star, however if i open my mail, and decide not to read any of the new mail, then simply close that option and return to the basic home page, will there still be little red stars notifying me of unread mail.

Second, if given the same scenario, I open my mail, read the new mail and then close it up and mark it as unread. Go back to the basic home page, will the stars still be there indicating new mail or not.?

For both questions, no there will be no star but rather a small orange envelope at the top.

Is the red star and the orange folder theme-dependent or software-dependent (meaning if theme-dependent, it can be changed to other icons)?
