Damn good question. I am trying out bbmaps right now. However I am inside and that may be affecting my boy acquiring a satellite

Well that doesn't seem fair. I wonder how they justify that.

They justify it by "encouraging" you to upgrade to a Storm.

I'm hoping after the Alltel acquisition is final (read Dec 12th somewhere), that the GPS capabilities will be made identical to Alltel's policy. Probably just wishful thinking...

~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~ the Alltel policy addition is our only hope to get GPS fully functional on our devices. There is a way around the Built-In GPS, that is to but a GPS reciever for a keychain, or something similar that is external. I used my co-workers Bluetooth GPS Keychain reciever and it worked on my 8830.

Personally, I will more than likely switch carriers before I buy an external GPS unit, just out of principle. I'm tired of the runaround I get from support regarding the issue. One moment it's done for my safety. Another it's the third party software's fault as they have no restrictions. They can't even come up with a consistent lie.

It appears that they've unlocked the GPS for BBMaps this morning for OS 4.5+ blackberry users.

Connect the phone to the desktop manager and add the application back via the application manager.

Yeah, its just that I am on the road and won't be back to the office for a while. I am pretty stoked to see this opening up and it would be fun while I am on the road.

I have an 8330 VZW and i can testify that it works completely with BB Maps in O.S. 4.5. It's a kick to ride around the city and look at the lil arrow move as I move! Finally! Make sure u go into <Options> <Advanced Options> <GPS> and set GPS Services to "Location On" and GPS Data Source to "Device GPS." Then while you're still in Advanced Options go to <Applications> scroll down to Blackberry Maps and hit the "Menu" button. Scroll down to "Edit Default Permissions" and set everything to "Allow." Now you're all set! (p.s. Ummm....Google Maps? What's that?)/sarcasm
