Pearl flies circles around The Wing

Ok, so I almost did it. I almost became one of the "other" guys who switches from the world of Blackberries, to another device in hopes of a brighter future...a better way of life. Well actually for a brief moment in time, I was. I did.

My brand spankin'new T-Mobile Wing came in today at about 2pm and at about 6pm I had it packed back up and ready to ship back to the ungodly place in which it came. Yes upon opening the package I had shivers of excitement that ran through my blood. Even after gazing upon the device and feeling it's rubbery coating against my hands, I felt as if this was the right choice. I felt as if my $500...yes that's not a typo, $500 of my hard earned and I mean hard earned dollars had been worth every penny. This feeling, as I will explain, will soon be only a distant memory hiding way down deep in the corners of my mind. The deepest corners where not even under the influence of heavy narcotics will appear again.

Ok enough of the drama...here's the scoop.

I opened the package and started rummaging through the box checking out all of the accesories that came with it. I had the data cable, the home charger, a nice stereo headset, an extra stylus and a pretty classy leather pouch as well. There was also a HUGE owners manual and a bunch of quick start guides, pretty much the same as any phone. But I was happy so far. And as I pulled out the Wing and started to play around with it, I actually loved the feel of it in my hand. It was definitely heavier than the Pearl but as far as length and width goes, it wasn't that much bigger that I would complain about it. It actually felt quite nice. Larger than the Pearl, smaller than an SK3 and Treo. It also had this rubberized texture which made gripping very easy and secure feeling.

I popped open the battery cover and put the battery in. I also slid the Micro SD card from my Pearl into the side of the unit so I can test out the Media player as well. The first thing I noticed that i didn't like about the design was that the stylus was placed at the bottom of the device instead of the top. And while this isn't a major concern, it just felt awkward to have to grab it from the bottom and I constantly found myself reaching to the top of the device at first. Eh, no big deal, lets move on...

Ooh, Windows Mobile. Nice, right? Wrong. If you are familiar with Treos or other touch-screen stylus devices you would know that the general startup screens are first. You have the ones where you test out the stylus and align the touchscreen. That's usually the first thing you do. Well, I couldn't even get passed that. I started aligning the stylus then decided to slide out the keypad but uh oh, I did too many things at once and Windows Mobile (6 by the way) got really mad at me. So mad that it decided to give me the silent treatment. It didn't move, it didn't speak. It didn't do anything at all until I yanked the battery out of it and started all over. Damn....maybe just a glitch, I thought..we'll see.

So I started over, and was able to get through the setup parts. I then started to configure my 5 Faves when it froze again. This time I decided to be patient and wait a while. I decided to just admire the device from afar without touching the screen or hitting any buttons. I figured maybe it would give me a break and cooperate. Maybe it ralized how selfish and rude it was to stop talking to me before and this time was going to be civil and fair. Did it? No!!!!!! Another battery pull.

By now I was pretty frustrated with it. I mean the looks and feel were great but the functionality was horrible. I was able to finally setup my Yahoo email and load all of my contacts after only one other freeze up during the process but I just wasn't happy with it. Navigating through all the windows folders and screens was something that I hate to do on a PC, let alone on a handheld device. And although it was cool that the screen would switch from a porttrait view to landscape (vertical to horizontal) when sliding the keyboard out, there was a huge delay in between. You would hear the nice little sound when you slide the keyboard out but the display would be about 3 seconds behind it.

I did, however enjoy the WiFi. The internet was almost enjoyable to browse especially at full screen and using WiFi. And within seconds, I was posting comments on Myspace and looking through YouTube...although I didn't get to view any videos. Maybe my settings were off or maybe it's not possible on Windows Mobile 6 like the Pearl OS. Not sure. I didn't even get far enough into the phone to even find out. I had another freeze up while switching from the internet to the phone so I took the battery out....and it stayed out. I now have everything packed up and ready to ship back.

After putting my sim and Micro SD back into my Pearl, I swear it was as if I fell in love with it all over again. Or maybe I just realized what a solid device the BB Pearl is compared to The Wing and it just took a little taste of the dark side to find that out.

Anyway, so I'm thinking my next device would be another BB. So I'll wait for a BB with GPS, a camera, WiFi and maybe the ability to view streaming video. Will it happen? Who knows. For now I'm happy with my Pearl and even happier I didn't barter it for that Sony PSP like I almost did on Craigslist!!!! Damn, I would of been devistated.

    That's my story.

    Over and out.

I know wi-fi is very tempting, but then you are dragged back, unceremoniously into the dreaded reality, that is.......Windows Mobile. Welcome back my friend.....may you not look back. Thanks for taking one for the team!!

If all he did was say he didn't like it, how would we know why? How would we know if that was a concern of ours if he didn't include all of that information? A good review should include all the information another user might need to help make their decision. So if it's brief that doesn't mean it will have all the information those of us who are looking at that product will need. He gave us a good review.

Agreed! I was trying to decide between a Pearl and a Dash (also Windows Mobile) just this past weekend for my son - after reading this I am even more pleased he now owns the 2nd pearl in our family!

I wanted a Dash before I got my pearl, but on visit to the forums on the Dash killed that idea really quick. It seemed like nobody could get it to work and got frustrated with it and took it back. I never hear anything good about Windows Mobile OS (except in the ads, it's really cool looking there).
    BB Pearl, Seidio rubberized case.

Well thats the thing with WM. I'm in contact with those units since I worked for HP. WM is a good OS for those things that fits perfect in the MS-World. But if you try to work with this units: Forget it! Crashes, freeze and slow work is daily business. At least if you have more than 400 contacts and such many appointments on that devices...

Awesome review, loved the drama in the story. My friend was just bragging about his shiny new Wing. Good to know I still got better!

Yeah, if Windows Mobile was more stable and there was a faster processor running it, then maybe you can have some fun with it. But until then, my BB is like a rock. Thanks for the replies!
