    Newbie user - questions

Apologies in advance if this has been covered here (I'm sure it has), I just can't seem to hack my way through the thickets of information to find it.

    1. I would like to store music files on my Blackberry Pearl. I have been reading conflicing information that you have to convert the MP3's to smaller files to fit on the player. Is this true? If so - can someone point out a link to a decent free file converter for this?

    2. My Yahoo email appears in all code and text (links, pictures, etc) when I receive an email. Is this the way its supposed to be? Is there any way we can see emails in HTML form?

    3. When I go to Flash driven websites, they don't appear. Do I have to download a flash player for my device? And if so - any links, etc. would be most helpful.

I seem to have found the converting video's information - but there also appears to be competing topics on the subject. Is there one clear and concise topic that takes you step by step through the process?

Thanks for any and all help in advance.

Oh, yeah - one more thing - I tried to upload an avatar photo (and yes, I made sure it was under 20KB in size) - it wouldn't work. Do I need a higher post total level to do this?

    Thanks!

    Dave

hi dave - welcome to pinstack
    1) no - you need a media card - a microsd card to be able to put mp3's on your phone. depending on what OS your device is running depends on the size you will want to buy...you will definately need one if you are going to put video on your pearl
    2) im sure there is a technical way to explain why the email isn't in html, but i don't know how to...someone can help explain that better
    3) the flash player isn't going to work on the pearl either...sorry

    video encoding: http://blackberryforums.pinstack.com...ng_8100_a.html

i think the avatar thing is messed up...looks like you aren't the only one whose avatar won't load...not to worry, im sure it's being worked on

Thanks for the speedy reply, cherrichiodo.

Do you know where the best places to get the microsd card (and what it should cost) are?

Also - I want to buy a stereo headset - or do those plug converters work fine?

    thanks for the help!

Fry's has a 2gb micro sd for 59.99 no rebate required.

You can get a Jabra stereo headset to listen to your mp3 or videos.

dave - you are VERY welcome!
the cheapest? not really sure - i use www.pricegrabber.com a lot...that should show you pricing, etc.
what OS are you running? go here: options>about
its the third line down...ex: mine says v4.2.0.71
depending on what version you have - if the last two are .64 or above, you can use a 2gb microsd card. if you are running .42 then you can only use 1gb - or upgrade the OS to newer version and buy the 2gb.

check the bbshop here for stereo headphones

let us know if you have any more questions!

Thanks for the info, creepinchi. I see the BB Shop on this site here lists a Dane-Elec 1GB microSD for $29.95. Does that sound like a fair deal?

Also, they list a stereo headset for the same $29.95 price. Again, worth it? I see a Seidio 3.5 to 2.5 mm converter for $9.95. Maybe all I need is that?

    Its says: V4.2.0.64 (Platform 2.2.0.37)

    So - I can use a 2gb card?

    Thanks. I appreciate that.

    Re: Newbie user - questions

Thanks for the info, Mike. So, the 1 GB cost you approximately 10 pounds - which is roughly double in US dollars? Sounds like a fair deal.

I have another question regarding my Blackberry Pearl email:

Is there any way I can mass delete emails in my inbox? Often I'll read the email on the computer and then see it in my blackberry inbox. Having to delete them one at a time is time consuming and tedious.

Is there any way to select a whole group of them and delete?

Thanks for any answers on this.

~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~to mass delete emails hover over the date at the top of the messages window and click on the menu button. Then select the option that says "delete prior"

    Welcome to pinstack!

    Re: Newbie user - questions

Dave - sorry for the delay
you can use a 2gb - for sure! you can buy them locally (best buy, circuit city, fryes) or online. I personally, to find the best prices for stuff like that, use www.pricegrabber.com.
another easy way to mass delete is hold down the shift/aA key and scroll the trackball at the same time, up or down, to hi-lite the emails you want to delete, hit the delete key and respond with yes or no.

Dave, just a heads up on the Seidio 3.5 to 2.5 mm converter for $9.95. I just got mine today and found out that it's not stereo capable.

Thanks for all the info, everyone.

Seems I better be sure any adaptor I get is stereo capable. The link you posted looks good, steedek. I was kinda hoping I could just pop into a Radio Shack and get it there.

Maybe its worth it to get the dedicated headphones?

I have another question that relates to convering files.

Does anyone know how I can convert a .m4a music file to an MP3?

Is there a free (or relatively low cost) converter program online somewhere?

Thanks for all your help so far.
