New to BlackBerry Pearl (8100c) - Bluetooth and Pinning

    Hello,

I hate to sound like a noob, but I have a few questions about a couple features on my new BlackBerry Pearl (8100c) running OS 4.2.0.73. My BlackBerry is AT&T branded operating on the Cingular network without a data plan.

My first and most annoying problem is that I am unable to transfer files (pictures and ringtones) from my previous phone, an LG CU500, to my new phone via bluetooth. I have browsed pinstack quite a bit looking for answers and I've seen conflicting answers as to whether or not this is possible. When I initiated a transfer from my previous phone to my BlackBerry, I am asked to select where I want to save the file. When I select a location and choose save I am given a message stating that the filename is invalid. As far as I can tell, the file names are perfectly legitimate and I get this message for any type of file I try to send. I've only had this BlackBerry since last Friday, so I'm kinda worried that it is some sort of hardware failure. I've updated the OS and done numerous restarts to no avail. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Secondly, I am unable to send PIN messages to a contact despite having her proper PIN number. I type a message and select send, but the message is never sent. It just tells me it is trying and then several hours later fails. I have considered this might be because I don't have a data plan, but the point of a PIN message is that it doesn't use network routing so I don't see how this could be the problem. Either way, I am at a loss and would appreciate any help.

    Thanks

    hi and welcome to pinstack

as for the second question pin messaging you do need a data plan as the pin goes through bb messenger because pin messaging is data and not sms , otherwise everybody would get a blackberry just to send cheap sms , and as for the first question , you need to back up your ringtones if they are mp3 format and pictures to your computer and then transfer them back to your blackberry by usb cable it is far easier .

When you savin via Bluetooth on the receiver phone you have to be in that folder where you want to save it.

About pin, you got to have data plan do send or receive em.

When I try to receive a file via bluetooth, I am in the folder I want it to save. That's when it gives the file name error.

Thanks for the info on PINs antx16. I don't have a way to transfer the ringtones to my computer from my old phone. I've ordered a microSD card so if I can't get the bluetooth to work I'll just use that. However, I don't understand why bluetooth isn't working.

what ever you send you must go into the corresponding folder on the bb hit menu and you will see an option " Recieve Using Bluetooth"

Yes. All file names contain characters.

There are no strange characters in the names--only letters and spaces. I even tried it without the spaces since the files already on my BlackBerry used underscores. No joy.

laz, thanks but I've very much aware of that.

I don't have a microSD card in either phone. However, the BlackBerry has 10mb free and the files are a fraction of that size somewhere in the order or 100kb.

characters, schmaracters...always a smart one in the bunch

i've never tried to save anything to the device without the sdcard. i know you are limited to file size with no sdcard. i don't think its a bt issue.

    ::edit::
its a matter of what is the largest size file you can transfer, without an sdcard...

They are mp3's. I checked and I believe that is supported by the pearl.

    Yes, I did.

How do you increase "file size limit"?
Sorry, it doesn't. The file size of the file is much less than 2.7mb.
