    Question New Blackberry User(help needed)

First off, Hello everyone. Now that we have that out of the way I need some help. Can anyone give me a run-down on any essential software I will need (also where i can download these programs). I'm on the T-mobile network. I'll mostly be using my 8100(I like the way that sounds!!! ) for e-mails, browsing the net, music, and IM's. Also whats the highest capacity SD card a pearl can handle? Thanks in advance for your help. Hopefully in the future I'll be able to do the same for someone else.

Hi Jimpy... I'm new to blackberry as well. I just bought a red pearl 8100 from Cingular/AT&T yesterday. Transitioning from a Treo 650.

    Hit quite a few roadblocks...

have you figured out where the SD card goes?

    Hello and welcome to PinStack.

The 8100 can hold up to 2GB of external memory without any problems and I dont think you will need anymore memory cause 2GB is alot of memory for a phone.

And for the applications, it just all depends on what you want, and what you like.

If you travel alot and need directions I would go with Google Maps its a great program and it lets you use GPS if you have a GPS receiver. www.google.com/gmm

Now for a alternative internet browser go with Opera Mini. It sometimes works faster than the Blackberry Browser. www.operamini.com

Now for IM's JiveTalk is one of the best apps. But they have now moved out of the beta testing and now you would have to pay for it. $20 for the program. www.beejive.com

Or here is a free program which works well but not that much of a good looking program. its called Ramble IM. I dont have a link for that one but maybe someone else can find a link for you.

This is all i can think of for right now. But if you would like other programs dont hesitate to pin me or just reply to this post.

Good luck and hope you like your phone

The SD card goes in the little holder under the battery next to the SIM card slot. It works in the same way - http://www.blackberryforums.com/gene...rosd-chip.html

The highest it can handle is 2Gb I believe. I got mine from newegg for very little: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820211065

As for essential software, try this thread: - http://blackberryforums.pinstack.com..._programs.html

The SD card goes under the battery. So what you do is take the battery out, and on the top left corner of the device where is SIM card is above that, thats where the SD card goes.

But make suer you have a micro SD because thats all that will fit in the pearl

I am pretty new to the Pearl as well and have had some decent success figuring things out, albeit certainly not a computer wiz by any means. I do need help though. I have tried to download from my computer both a wmv and asf video file without luck. When the 8100 is connected to the computer, the files show up in the video folder however when not connected to the computer, are not there. Any help would be much appreciated.

Was there a problem with the Desktop Manager that came on the CD with the Pearl? What problems were on the CD itself? Sorry just new to the Pearl also.

    Youngblood,

Most likely your CD does not contain the most up to date version of Desktop Manager. I beleive that 4.2 sp2 was only released Mid May...

    Slim,
Need a bit more info - Have you installed an SD card or are you using device memory?
How are you transfering the files, with Media Manager? If so, do you have Desktop Manager 4.2 sp2 with Roxio? You say that the files appear when you are connected, please tell us where you see them and how you are looking at them.

Also 8100 is very picky about what files it will recognize. Try a known unprotected mp3 or download a ringtone from mobile41.com and see if you get a different result.

    Re: New Blackberry User(help needed)

    Hi Gary,
Thanks for the help. I started installing the new update SP2 and it asked one question which I am not sure which route to go.

Blackberry Enterprise Server or Desktop Redirector?

    or

    Blackberry Internet Service"

I don't work for a company that I will use my Blackberry just for surfing the internet and checking my email.

    Thanks
    YB

Most likely you are using BIS - Blackberry Internet Service. How did you set up your email to push to your pearl, on the internet?

    Re: New Blackberry User(help needed)

    Hi Gary,
I do have an SD card. To transfer, I did not use the Desktop Manager, I simply clicked and dragged from PC windows explorer to the Video folder within the SD card of the BB while connected with the USB. This is the same method that I used when transferring MP3 based songs to the SD. I have the 4.2.0.14 version of Desktop Manager however it is difficult using it due to my company's view on downloading software. It is on my PC but not sure if it is completely engaged with the BB. When connected to my PC with the USB, within the windows explorer, the two video files are there (one is wmv and the other is asf). However when I disconnect the BB from the PC, I do not see them in the video folder on the SD card.
