Yes, you need a data plan to use MSN Messenger. You'll need a data plan for practically everything, actually, except the phone & SMS. Maps won't work either.

    Sorry.

    .tcp?

I've seen this before, but don't understand, nor know how to find this.

What's it all about? Sorry to jump "off topic" here.

you still need a data plan.
It's a 30 day trial of the program, it still uses data though.

I've got an unlimited data plan through Telus, but not unlimited texting. But I was told that I would have to "pay" for MSN (as opposed to BBMessenger for free) by the associate.

IF I download MSN and use the app on my phone, am I going to get billed for using it?

    Thanks!

If you have unlimited data, no.
It just uses data. same as web browsing, emailing or BB Messenger. if you're worried, call Telus tech support and confirm this with them, and ask them to note your account, so if you do find charges, they'll credit you for them.

Rock on! thanks for the advice...I've called in the past and supposedly had "notes" on my account--hasn't always helped!

But I'll give 'er a shot!

    Thanks again!

I've got the Telus Unlimited "everything" ($15/month) plan. So it's covered.

so now... what's the best MSN Messenger to download?

    Thanks again all!

JiveTalk is what i've heard is the best.
    But it's expensive.
If they do charge you for something, and theres a note on their saying that you shouldn't be charged for it, they'll credit you, otherwise you'll be responsible for the charges. Better safe than sorry! This is my experience with all carriers as a Rogers dealer, sales rep, store manager and customer anyway! lol

    Oh, $20 isn't bad. I thought it was $50.
    Never heard of IMHere.
Anything more than free is too much for me. I'm all Open Source and Linux
    eMSNlite is free
No idea how good\bad it is though.

Nimbuzz is by far the best IM client. Works fantastically and stays connected.

My experience with Jive is much better than with Nimbuzz. YMMV, as with anything.

JiveTalk has two prices, $20 for a "one time" license to ONE device. Or $30 for a "user license" that licenses the software to you. It allows you to change devices without having to buy it again. I highly recommend you pay the $30.

As a bonus, Jive works with all the major IM platforms out there...Google Talk, Yahoo Messenger, AIM, MSN, Jabber...

not entirely true...i don't have a data plan and can use any of the messengers on my blackberry...yahoo, aol, msn, minus the blackberry messenger (although i never tried)...however they are counted as sms messages on my plan...i have t-mobile.
