I have never been able to send or recieve mms messages because i havnt had the data plan. But if I order the plan and get the service packs sent to my phone will I be good? I would like to get the service packs sent then cancel the data plan after the 1st month and my mms messages should still work correct? my carrier is t-mobile.

    thanks

Welcome to the Stacks Dugan. MMS with TMO is a seperate service than the BB plan. I found that out the hard way. They have a seperate plan for that. Give them a call to see what options they have.

I'm currently with Tmo and with the BB it's not exactly as cut and dry as with other media phones.

Eg. since pearl runs h264 while the standard video capture phone runs h263, they have an option that they can cut on for 8100 accounts that lets the MMS be received directly in the message (without being redirected to t-mobile picture site) and the video is converted server side and shown as a moving picture & .wav file (playing simulatenously) in the open msg. obviously it is no longer in video form, but this was the only option they could come up with (even I don't get why RIM went with h264). I tested the option for a while, hated it, and had them cut it off (I prefer to be directed to the tmob site, click the video, play it and save it to my phone).

Also they don't allow the MMS to stand alone as a package deal. Say you want a BB and no internet package, then they will only allow it to work as a phone and SMS. If you wish for MMS capabilities you have to first get a BB plan and then the MMS will be opened to you. It is .25c per message. At this point you can choose to get an MMS package of 400, 1000, etc. In their eyes, data is data whether in email or mms form, but they feel they can charge you for mms.

A thread had come up where a tmobile rep on the site was complaining that he was tired of explaining to "kids" that came into the store about all of this, so he just would say "you can't message without a data plan" and did not explain in proper detail.

I gave him a quick "WATAA!" because I hate when people knowingly misinform customers.

Thanks, that does help clarify it for me (and I'm sure alot of others). Not all that straightforward is it?

my question is, is it like this on Cingular with not being able to have MMS unless you have a BB plan, or is this just Tmob's doing?

I would also love to know if its the nature of the 8100 not to be able to seperate the two or just phone companies trying to make a buck off limiting features without combo add-on plans.

I was told the same thing by my TMO rep but lucky for me I discovered these boards before purchasing the pearl. After a bit of browsing I noticed that I could sms text just not MMS text. Realistically I can't see having my Pearl without the data plan and I have a plan that gives me 400 texts so that's more than enough for me.

    Thanks for the clarification BlackNinja!

BLACKNINJA-yeah it's the same way with Cingular but their plan is more expensive. Usually runs 40 bucks but they have it on sale right now for 29.99. I know because I needed a new carrier and looked into both tmo and cingy within the month.
