One of the first things I tried was to reformat the card in the Pearl, but I also reformatted the card again after I upgraded the OS (to see if there was any difference in the format) but that didn't seem to change anything.

The Pearl can recognize the card and can access the card (one of my ring tones is on the Media Card, and I can play my playlist from the card in the Media Player tool). Also, when I loaded the files on to the card (using an SD adapter on my computer flash card reader) the computer can see the card and the Blackberry specific directory structure (ringtones, music, pictures, etc).

It's almost as if the USB Mass Storage function is on vacation or something.

    Re: Mass Storage Mode Problems

I am able to fix similar problems via Device Manager on my PC. When my BB is plugged in, the SD card appears in the Disk Drives section of the Device Manager (right-click My Computer, select Manage, click on Device Manager), but it is shown with a warning icon (yellow exclamation). Windows says it cannot start the device. By Disabling and then Enabling it, the mass storage works.

    Hope it helps!

    Hello sun spot,

That sounds like an interesting proposition, and the Device Manager is one place I haven't looked yet.

I ran a quick check on my work computer, and no device appears under the Device Manager -> Disk Drives. I'll try it also at home, since there may be some work-related restrictions that prevent me from seeing everything.

May sound silly but when was the last time you pulled the battery while the device is on?

    Re: Mass Storage Mode Problems

    Hello j llama,

It's a valid questions, especially since I've resorted to using the SD card adapter in my flash card reader (and it involves a lot of removing and re-inserting the battery). However, I always make a point of shutting down the unit (either by holding the power "hang-up" button or using the "Turn Power Off" option) before removing the battery.

But I'm also not perfect, so if I happened to do it, what would the consequences be?

    Re: Mass Storage Mode Problems

I never power the device down using the power key (soft reset).
I remove the battery at least once a week (while the device is on, this is known as a hard reset).
Blackberrys can be tricky sometimes, first thing I do when I encounter just about any type of error is remove my battery which dumps your temporary flash memory. May sound silly as well but you may want to try and power cycle your PC's also. I remember a few times where my home computer wasn't seeing the BB memory card via USB, power cycling both resolved (at least for me)

    Re: Mass Storage Mode Problems

    @ j llama,

My PC is powered down at the end of every evening when I'm done using it, so I should be okay on the PC side.

I just performed a hard reset on the phone by taking the battery out with the phone on, and the USB Mass Storage device still doesn't seem to want to function properly. I also tried using the Media Manager to access the microSD card, but it still only sees the Device Memory (and not the Media Card).

    @ Everyone,

Just to summarize the events so far:

    My issues:
    • Mass Storage Mode does not want to enable, and I seem to have no option to enable it manually.
    • The media card does not appear on in My Computer as removable storage.
    • The Media Manager software does not see the Media Card on the phone when connected (MM can only see Device Memory).
Things I have tried (that haven't worked):
    • Upgrading the phone OS and Platform.
    • Re-formatting the card inside the phone.
    • Set the "Auto-Connect" setting to "Yes" and "Prompt".
    • Performed a hard-reset on the phone.
    • Removed and re-inserted the card (several times).
    Things I haven't tried yet:
    • Trying a 1 GB SD card instead of a 2 GB one, to see if it's a card size issue.
On the bright side (things that work):
    • The phone can make use of the memory card for storing pictures and things.
    • I can transfer files to the memory card manually by taking it out of the phone and using a flash card reader.
    • The phone can read files I place on the memory card.
Thanks again for all your help everyone!

    Ed,

I have posted your issue onto the experts discussion area to see if we get any new ideas or solutions. In the meantime if possible I would like you to try a new or different media card in the device and let us know if that changes the situation.

    Hello GaryF,

Thanks for the cross-post into the experts area. I'm currently in the process of tracking down a friend who has a Pearl with a 1 GB microSD card (that we both know works correctly) and I'll let you guys know what comes up.

    Re: Mass Storage Mode Problems

    @ Everybody

Alright guys, I think I might have found the cause of the problem. My Pearl USB connector is missing a pin! I compared my device with a friend's unit that works, and we found that the connector on my unit has a pin mashed at the bottom of the receptacle.

Anyways, I'm gonna do an exchange (I still have a few days before the 10 day return/replace warranty runs out) and hopefully my problems will be resolved.

    The offending connector!

Thanks for all your help guys, and I'll keep you guys updated.

    Re: Mass Storage Mode Problems

Yeah, I've backed up my data several times and loaded some apps and small pictures to the phone via the Desktop Manager and Media Manager software. I also performed a full OS upgrade!

I'm going to try and get the unit replaced tomorrow (and at the latest Wednesday, since that's when my 10-day return policy expires!) and keep you guys updated on the results.

    Re: Mass Storage Mode Problems

Small update: I looked at some USB-pinout diagrams, and according to the chart, the pin I'm missing is not used for data transfer (hence the ability to sync), but for "cable detection".

    USB Pinout Page

I suspect the Desktop Manager/Media Manager use the "Data+" and "Data-" pins for determining if the device is connected (and to get device ID data on connection) and the USB Mass Storage Mode is triggered by the "x-pin" (so the device knows when to enable Mass Storage Mode).

This is all speculation (I'm no expert in USB connections or the the inner workings of the Pearl) so don't take all I'm saying as definite facts; I'm just throwing some ideas out there.

    Re: Mass Storage Mode Problems

    @ Everybody

I've got good news and bad news: The good news is that I exchanged the unit last night and upgraded the OS and Platform to the current Rogers version. The device also has all the proper pins in the USB connector.

The bad news is that Mass Storage Mode still won't work! I only tried it at work, so there's a possibility of IT restrictions on my work computer, so I'll keep you guys updated when I try it out at home.

Also, on Monday when my friend came over to help troubleshoot the Pearl, we tried my 2 GB microSD card in his Pearl, and it connects properly via USB Mass Storage Mode.

    Re: Mass Storage Mode Problems

I was having the same problem. I fixed it by going to the device manager under Universal Serial Bus controllers when my Pearl was attached and updating the drivers for the Blackberry Smartphone and it has been working.
