    Question Mass Storage Mode Problems

    Hello everyone!

I've poked around the forums and tried to find an answer/solution to my problem but I couldn't find a thread with problem similar to mine, so here goes:

I installed a 2GB microSD card into the Pearl 8100, and the device sees it there (the Pearl asked me if I wanted to store photos on the card, and when browsing for media, there is a "Media Card" folder present in the folder list).

However, when I enable Mass Storage Mode and plug the Pearl into my computer via USB cable, nothing happens. There is no prompt, and the device does not appear in My Computer as Removable Storage. Also, when I use the Media Manager, it only shows "Device Memory" and I cannot see any pictures I have taken and stored on the Media Card.

    As for my particulars:

    OS: 4.2.0.64 --> 4.2.1.109 (Updated!)
    Platform: 2.2.0.37 --> 2.3.0.85 (Updated!)
    Desktop Manager: 4.3

    Media Card Support: ON
    Encryption Mode: None
    Mass Storage Support: ON
Auto Enable Mass Storage When Connected: Prompt

    Total Space: 1.91 GB
    Free Space: 1.91 GB

Computer OS (Work): Windows XP Professional
Computer OS (Home): Windows Vista Ultimate

Both computers don't recognize the devices as a "Device With Removable Storage". The memory card has been formatted a few times, so I don't think that is the problem. I tried several different USB cables in different ports, and the Desktop Manager syncs fine and the Media Manager can see the device as connected (it just cannot access the microSD card).

On my Vista computer at home, I did the "Manage Drives" thing to see if the OS is trying to double-book a drive letter, but there is no change at all in the drive listing (no "unlisted" Removable Storage Device appears in the list when I plug in the Pearl and re-scan the drives).

If no solution can be found, I'm prepared to just use the SD/microSD card adapter and load the files manually, but I'd like to get this working if possible.

    Your help is much appreciated!

You may have to use a card reader to get your pics and other stuff onto your computer, then put it back in, and format it inside the blackberry.

    Re: Mass Storage Mode Problems

    Thanks for the prompt response!

I'm currently at work so I don't have access to my adapter or card reader, but I'll try that when I get home tonight.

Edit: The picture is just a test pic, so I'll format the card inside the BB and give it another shot.

Update: Reformatted the card inside the Pearl and there is no change to its behaviour.

Huh. Might be the phone's OS, because I'm running 4.2.1.96 and I haven't come upon this problem. I think an OS upgrade will address this problem.

    @ kingrykku27
Sounds like a plan. I'll try that out and let you know how it goes.

    @ GaryF
Not that I know of. At home I haven't actively enabled any encryption so I assume it's disabled by default (ie: no BitLocker drive encryption or anything). I can't be too sure at work, but it doesn't seem to have anything enabled. My USB HDD works fine when plugged in.

    Re: Mass Storage Mode Problems

Alrighty... I updated my Pearl OS (see first post) and I'm still having issues with the Pearl not prompting me for Mass Storage Mode (and nothing appears in the My Computer area).

Edit: I was poking around the settings and the documentation, and I thought about enabling Mass Storage Mode manually. However, when I follow the instructions (turn Auto-Enable to NO and press the Menu key to select "Enable USB Mass Storage Mode") I don't have the option to enable it manually.

All I have in the menu pop-up is:

    Help
Change Option (Goes back to "Yes" "No" "Prompt" or whatever setting I just happen to be hovering over.)
    Remove Media Card
    Format Card
    Save
    Switch Application
    Close

There's no "Enable USB Mass Storage Mode" option.

    ED,

    1. Have you tried adjusting the phone setting to Auto Enable Mass Storage Mode when connected?

    2. Did you install Destop Manager from a CD or download?

    Re: Mass Storage Mode Problems

    Hello GaryF,

    1. I tried various flavours of the "Auto-Enable Mass Storage When Connected" setting (Yes & Prompt) but there seems to be no response from the unit either way. The "Prompt" setting does not prompt me when connected, and the "Yes" setting does not seem to make a difference.

    2. I installed the Desktop Manager software from a download on the Blackberry site. (It's called "Desktop Software v4.3 (English).exe")

    Hello tjhaskins76,

You bring up a good point. I'll have to see if I can track down a 1GB microSD card somewhere and give it a try.

    Re: Mass Storage Mode Problems

I've just talked with (well... emailed is more accurate) a friend who has a Pearl with a 2GB microSD card and he says it functions correctly.

I'm going to try out a smaller card anyways and see if that works, because it might be a weird firmware or hardware version thing.
