    to check, go to
    options> advanced options> sim card> meppd

under personalization, if the SIM, Network and the rest are enabled, you are locked to the carrier,
    otherwise (disabled) you are unlocked.

    Re: locked or unlocked?

Edit: SeRViiCiiO beat me to it...

Here is a thread which explains this exact thing.

    http://blackberryforums.pinstack.com...ed_locked.html

Basically, go to Options --> Advanced Options --> SIM Card

In this menu, press the keys to spell "meppd".

More information should appear and the entry for "Network" should say "Disabled". If it say "Active" it's not unlocked.

    Hope this helps!
    As always, just my opinion...

I believe you do this with your SIM in the phone. But then again, if you're checking the phone, I'm not sure it would matter.

    Try both?

If locked, you cannot use other cell networks.

It means that you are locked to that network. i.e. your provider. It means that you cannot use the phone on another GSM network.

Basically if you're with TMO and want to stick in a AT&T SIM card it will not work. LOCKED
UNLOCKED you can switch in and out different service providers SIM cards.

    Hope that helps.

    Re: locked or unlocked?

it surprises me that there is currently no information available online for generating an unlock key from an imei and pin on your own. i would expect that those who provide the service for a fee have software designed for this purpose and wish to monopolize the process. however, i expected to be able to find a free alternative if i dug around online enough. my carrier refused the request for an unlock code outright and gave the impression that they never would provide this code. i refuse to pay for this code for the simple fact that i get kicks from finding little workarounds and cheats for these types of security features in software and hardware. unfortunately i have no experience/knowledge to figure this one out myself but i'll keep waiting for some kind of software key generator to come along. anything i should know that might chage my mind and make me give in to one of those online unlocking services?

    Re: locked or unlocked?

I am not long with the BB however, I since I have had one I have been trying to find any info on this unlocking problem. I agree that there should be somthing on the web, buuuut, after about six weeks of loooooooong nights looking, it seems to me that the easy thing to do is pay the money, if you really want to be free from having to use only one carrier.
If anyone else can help, this is a very big problem (and not only in the BB scene)
