Location based services is used when you dial 911 and lets the 911 find out where you are located. See

    Not necessarily on the 8100.

Location based services are used when using a GPS device along with the phone.

Dont need a GPS device, they know what cell tower you are connected to and where it is. They can then use the next two cell towers nearest to that and based on signal strength and where they are they can guess pretty close to where you are by triangulation. Ut only takes the computers a second or so and that info is relayed to the 911 operator. This has been in place in the US on all phones since oct, 2001.

They always know where you are as long as your phone is turned on.

    Re: location based services

I hate to disagree with someone, however, in a way you are correct. What you are referring to is triangulation, the use of cell towers to triangulate a signal and find where the symbol is coming from.

However, the location based services which he is referring to on the pearl are for GPS pucks or devices used in conjunction with the device.

    Per RIM website:

BlackBerry supported location based service pucks

    Re: location based services

The BlackBerry Maps application is included in BlackBerry Device Software 4.2. BlackBerry device users can use the BlackBerry Maps application to access maps and turn on Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking on the BlackBerry Pearl 8100 smartphone. BlackBerry Maps integrates into BlackBerry device software applications (for example, the address book) for increased access to location information.

System administrators can use IT policy rules to manage the use of BlackBerry Location Based Services for location-based applications and services, as well as BlackBerry Maps within the organization.

    Re: location based services

I stand corrected, there seem to be two definitions of LBS. I was describing Location Based Service and how it works, you were describing one of the Location based Services based on location based service if that makes sense.

Yeah. Its no problem. I understood what u were saying and coming from, just wanted to make sure he knew what the LBS was for the 8100. They could have tried to name it something less confusing.
