I was just retorting to your authoritative/argumentative statement that you were wondering why people keep calling it a ball because according to you it's a half-dome.

Since I looked at it with a loupe and saw how it operates, I don't think you should be sticking to your "half-ball" position.

And as the other post said, why is RIM calling it a trackball if it ain't?

I just watched a little piece of lint go from one side of the ball into the socket and come out the otherside. It's definately a ball

I've also been thinking that there should be a way to take the chrome ring off
and clean behind the ball. But, even with the chrome ring off, there's a white ring that holds it in place. I think it may be in there more or less permanently.
I only think it's one guy in here who is saying it's a half-dome joystick thingy.

See my pic, that notch in the ring is there for a reason. I am sure that the engineers designed that mechanism to be cleaned or replaced.

From what I can see, that white ring is held in place by the outer stainless ring. I think it all disassembles easily.

Tell you what, why don't YOU take a screwdriver to it and let us know what happens. That's better than me frying mine. Just kidding. We will find out in a few months from RIM how to clean it.

Yeah, I saw that happen on mine. It's just a matter of time before all of these need a cleaning. That lint is going somewhere.

The lint is going to destroy your balls!

And then you will require to buy new Pearls.

It's one of those thermodynamic laws about everything wearing down and breaking.

How will RIM (or any manufacturer) sell more units if the original units don't break?

Build it cheap, it won't last, and then more sales follow. Basic capitalism.

    Hey guys...

    :: : Paging Captain Obvious : ::

This ball, globe, half-globe, joystick, trackball thing that you all are referring to is actually a whole, round ball.

    And it is white.
    Like a pearl.
And about the same size as a pearl. Hence the name.

Oh yea, one more thing, an introduction:
My name's Amy. I'm new to the forum, new to blackberry, new to Tmobile and absolutely in love with my 8100. I sleep with it, too.

I’ve heard some propose that this ‘globe’ is in fact flat. And that if you roll it far enough you would simply fall off the edge…

now that we know it's a ball... does anyone know if you can change the color from white to green or red or blue. It flashes those colors when the phone rings so I am wondering if you can change the normal color of white to something else?

Who cares what color it is????? It is cool and easy to use, I don't even care if it lights up ( but it is really cool), and now we are worried about what color it is?? Live with it, and quit worrying about changing the colors

I don't think he was worrying about it, he was just asking if it could change colors.

Personally, I wondered the same thing but did not see it in the materials, so I assumed it would not. Plus, if that was a feature, you bet it would be listed on the box.

I would love for it to change colors and I can see that day coming. It's such a natural in terms of having it as a feature.

I think I would alternate between blue and red and forget about white.
