Question IM => sms or Data?

    Hallo,

I'm new here. I've got my Pearl (T-mobile US) since a month and I have question:

I have IM application provided by T-mobile where I can sign in to AOL, ICQ, MSN and Yahoo. When I'm having conversation (AOL for example) each post is counted as a data or sms?

    thanks for help

    SMS.

The OZ IM client is all accounted for as text messages. (yahoo/msn/aol/icq)

they are sms....you can download yahoo or google talk from mobile.blackberry.com and they use data. also for other IM clients (aim, icq, msn, etc) there are many third-party apps which for a one time fee that provide programs (which are compatible with those IM's) and use data instead of sms

lol, I forgot to mention there is a website called www.handango.com which could provide those 3rd party apps if you're interested.

I believe Ramble is data. It's an AIM client.

Also, if you have a little patience, Google Talk can be hacked to allow buddies from other IM systems. Works great and integrates beautifly into BB environment. And free, of course.

    There's two parts,
    1. installing Google Talk on your BB ( and creating a Google account if you don't have one ).
    2. Setting up a transport in your Google Talk account. This step is best done from a desktop pc and involves adding a extra server to your gmail account that acts like an intermediary between networks.
I provided a couple links in this thread:

    http://blackberryforums.pinstack.com..._my_pearl.html

It takes you through the transport business step-by-step.

If you get stuck, let me know and I'll be happy to help you along.

I'm really happy with how it turned out for me .

    Cheers,
    Josh

i got the upgrade through cingular, and have unlimited text that worked fine on my RAZR, including the use of the browser through GPRS, however i cant get anything working, SMS or browsing, not sure why i'm paying extra for text if i'm not allowed to use it on the device.

Part of having a blackberry is using the data. It is an oxymoron having a BB without a data plan. Of course a data plan isn't for everybody. But to use a BB for what it is used for, I do suggest getting a data plan if the price is affordable for you.

Re: IM => sms or Data?

actually it isn't an oxymoron, having a PDA device does not immediately mean you want to use it for email, for me it's basically to fuse an mp3 player a phone and a contact/schedule/task PDA device in one, i'm looking into the data plan for further features, but just because i like the BlackBerry's OS and phone better than a Motorola Q or Blackjack and actually intended on purchasing a blackjack until i was shown the pearl, doesn't mean i HAVE to do data.
