How can I find out what programs are running in the background?

I have a 8100 and recently I noticed that the battery is dying progressively faster... I dont have extra themes and I dont have extra language files and my bb is pretty trimmed down. So I think the culprit is that I have too many programs running in the background. I have a truckload of extra programs that I loaded into my phone.

MiniMoni. Nimbuzz. GMail. Viigio Google Maps. BBWeather. FreeSMS. Beyond411. OperaMini. PackMan. SoftReset. Berry Phone Lookup. Jamtris. Pipes. MFRadio. Bubblet. Chronograph. My Alarm. BerryaCode.

So. I always exit out of Google Maps so it shouldn't be running in the background. MiniMoni is always active. NimBuzz is not always running because it zaps my battery and so I always make sure to exit from that... But what else is running? How can I find out what's running in the background?

Ok. That leads me to my next question... How can I stop them? Seems that GMail is running and I dont want it to. I logged off already and I want it to stop it. How?
