HELP! Trackball suddenly won't move down!

It was working fine this morning - I was using my browser, and the pearl stopped moving downward. It moves fine sideways and upward just fine. I have to put a lot of pressure on it to get it to move downward. Do you think the assembly could be dirty; if so, why wouldn't it have trouble moving in all directions?

Any advice would be most appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi Democat...

Have you tried a battery pull to reset the phone, just in case? Otherwise this thread has info on cleaning your trackball area. You might try some comressed air before you disassemble and see if that helps.

Yes, I've done 2-3 battery pulls, with no luck. It seems to move better while using a browser - while I'm at the home screen it's all I can do to get it to move down. I did see the cleaning instructions - thanks. I'm just afraid to do it because I'm afraid I'll mess it up!

I can understand that. Is this an intermittent or constant problem? How long have you had the phone? You may want to consider contacting your carrier about a replacement first.

Intermittent. I thought for a while it was working better, but the consistency varies depending on what I'm doing. The horizontal and vertical move rates are both set to the default of 80. I got the phone in May 2007.

    Thanks for your help.

I understand not wanting to risk damage to the phone. Try getting a can of compressed air and see if that will clean it out enough to work for you. If you keep it in your pocket/purse lint and junk can gum up the rollers. If the compressed air does not work i would call the carrier for a replacement. No need to risk damaging the phone if you are still in warranty.

Thanks. I think I'll try the canned air option. We're going to the AT&T store Saturday to get my husband a Curve, so I'll take my phone with me for a hands-on look if the canned air doesn't work.

i bought myself a new trackball unit. Since mine got extremely dirty and got annoyed. But it does cost you.
