Help for a newbie please :)

    Hi Everyone,

I'm new to pinstack and new to Blackberry as a whole!

I've had my pearl 8110 for a couple of weeks now, and I love it!, but there are a few things I can't seem to figure out how to do, and a couple of problems I have encountered. Hopefully you guys will be able to help me out a bit...

Ok, so first some details - my service provider is T-Mobile UK, and I am on the web 'n' walk unlimited data plan. I have set up my email (BIS) and all is working fine in that respect.

My problem with email is that I don't seem to be able to get my old email from the server onto my blackberry. I thought that as soon as I set up my account it would just download all of my emails, like my old Sony Ericsson did - but it didn't. Because of the kind of work I do I need access to all my emails - as it is, my pearl will only display the latest few sent for each day. So 2 things...

    1) Can I/How do I get all my email onto my blackberry?
    2) How can I stop the BB deleting the emails I receive earlier in the day?

I'm guessing the problems are due to the tiny memory available, but is there any way to store them of my SD card or something?

I've tried using the desktop manager to sync emails, but the option for emails is greyed out - I can't even select it. Does anyone have any suggestions?

The other problem I've been having is an intermittent one...sometimes the sounds randomly stops working (and it's happened twice when my alarm was supposed to sound - which was helpful!). Basically there is no sound available at all - and when I try to use the media player, it won't even start playing the track. The problem is solved by switching it off and on, but it doesn't really fix the problem of my alarm not going off! Is there any way to stop it happening altogether?

Thanks in advance for any advice guys, it is very much appreciated.

    Rach.

    First, welcome to Pinstack!

In regards to your old emails, check with the service providing your messaging (Yahoo, Google, etc).

Settings to store and resend email are maintained on that server, not the BIS server. You can think of the BIS server as a really fast way to forward emails to your Blackberry that you would normally receive somewhere else, say your desktop.

You won't be able to access any of the Desktop Manager features for email unless you use BES.

Someone who knows more about the alarms and profile settings will chime in on those topics.

    Hi

Thanks for the welcome and your advice. Oh ok, that makes sense then...I did try marking all my mail as unread, but I think the capabilities of the account are somewhat limited because it is on my university's server. Oh well I graduate in June (fingers crossed!) so shouldn't have to worry about it too much longer.

    Thanks again!

    Rach.

You can't use Desktop Manager to synch email. Email pushes to your device either thru BIS or BES, depending on your situation. Since you sound like a University student, my assumption is you would be using BIS. However, based on your post, I'm not sure you have a Blackberry Data Plan to provide you with BIS.

Do you have a BDP? If not, email won't function at all.

Sorry, but I don't think there is a way to get your "new" BB to go back and load old
emails. The Blackberry Internet Service polls your server for new mail, and it will store messages for a period of time (memory permitting), but I know of now way to get the older items on your BB other than re-sending/forwarding to yourself.

As for disapearing messages - take a look at this thread:

    Hi

Thanks for the replies - as I said in my first post, the BIS is working fine...I'm getting emails I just can't view them all. I am definitely subscribed the BB data plan.

Thanks very much for the links Gary, I thought it might be to do with the ridiculously small memory. I don't suppose there's any way to add more memory is there? I don't mean free up memory...I mean physically add it. I'm guessing not, as most people's problems would have been solved.

Oh well, look like i'm stuck with it as it is then...tbh i'm beginning to wish i'd kept my Sony Ericsson...at least I could keep stuff on that, rather than having to go on the net constantly. This BB just seems like a lot of hassle for no real gain. Oh well, you live and learn!

    Thanks again for the advice

The only way to get more memory on a BB is to delete apps, themes, language, that you don't use. Installing a memory card will allow you to store pictures, ringtones, movies, videos, on it.
